Hey everyone,

Before, I had a good impression of the D.O degree as another alternative to becoming a doctor. But I have been reading SDN and what is being said about the D.O degree and I am getting swayed. There are just so many comments both pre allopathic and pre osteopathic talking about md v. do and I have become convinced of the limitation of the d.o degree. Yes, the comments are informative but they seem to put the spotlight on the d.o degree that I have come to feel it to be inferior. I was just in the pre allopathic section and they talk about the d.o degree like its second class etc. I really want to be a doctor despite not having the best academic scores but these comments are making me wonder if I am ready for all the discrimination and etc regarding d.o and img since I have little chance at us md schools. It really makes me wonder if I am good enough!

All these comments about the health profession and where the md and do schools are heading and their prospects makes me feel that the only way to success is if I get into a us md school cause that is the safest bet.

I just want people out there to say good things. I don't care what, just say good things about everything cause I am tired of reading all these crap about this school is better or that degree is better etc. I am getting a headache and wonder if SDN is actually helpful to students or not. I am getting so depressed cause SDN is putting all these thoughts into my head about what is considered good and what is considered bad etc. SDN just puts the reality of how the world works and I just want to be in happy land right now. So please just say good things man. Anything!

here is your prescription,

1) Stop reading SDN

2) Go the carribean- Ross, SGU etc.

Here's what's really going on. You're looking at a bunch of premeds and med students' comments about things they have no clue about. For example, a fourth year undergrad doesn't know anything about whether an adcom looks down upon a letter from an MD instead of a DO. or whether you'll get in with a 24 MCAT and 3.9GPA. or if they'd rather see volunteer experience or work experience. only the adcoms know that.

If you want real answers, ask real people that will give you real information. Ask doctors, hospital administrators, etc. don't base your future plans on a bunch of 20-somethings trying to defend their degree (be it MD or DO).

My advise.... Go talk to people who are finished. Find doctors who will be willing to talk to you. Talk to M.D.'s about the D.O. route. Talk to D.O.'s about their experiences. Don't base your opinion on the SDN pre-anything boards. "Pre" means that no experience has been had in the matter. Talk to those who know what they are talking about.

👍

Whatever one's options regarding either degree may be, in the end it's up to you to decide which one you are comfortable with and would like to pursue. Personally (assuming I get into my DO school) I'm up for the challenge of enlightening both the medical community and the general populance about DOs. However, it is a choice that one must make for themselves. You really should do yourself a favor and research the two options first rather than listening to "a bunch of 20-somethings trying to defend their degree." 😎

Dude, just look at your prescription I know for sure that you're going to be a great doctor.

if you are unsure and insecure about the DO profession..do not pursue it..simple as that..you will be unhappy in med school...and are just wasting your money..and more importantly your money...you will also be unhappy in life in general..and will live to be a bitter old doctor..if you only want a MD degree from a US school...then spend the next couple of years to improve your stats...case closed...now go study for the mcats..

You said you want to be a doctor, correct? If you care about taking care of patients, what do the initials at the end of your name really mean? I chose to follow the osteopathic tradition not because I couldn't get into an allopathic school but, rather, because I actually liked the tradition. People on SDN, myself included, are not experts. Thus, my advice to you is to stop taking everything you read on SDN as proven fact and follow your own heart on where and what to do with your life.

My advice: No one is going to give a #$(t what initials you have behind your name once you graduate. Really. I am not kidding. If you're going to go through life worrying about what other people think, let me say, you're in for one brutal ride. Have some self-confidence. Read a book. Get off SDN. Go for a walk.

I am so depressed. I am getting rejected left and right from med schools. I have a pile of rejection letters from M.D. schools saying they could not give me an interview etc. I took the mcat twice and did not do well enough for the M.D. schools (don't know if good enough for the D.O schools - I applied to only three).

Sometimes I think this endeavor is a waste of time, although I dont' regret doing it.
Ask yourself this: Do I want to be a doctor or an MD? If your answer is doctor, then leave SDN and become a doctor. You already have a NYCOM acceptance; be happy.

How old are you?.....and do you still believe in Santa Clause?

I understand your insecurity, but it is nonetheless disconcerting. No matter what you may feel or experience in your medical career, remember this...

If you can put your hands on somebody and your mind to its greatest use, you will relieve another's pain. This is the greatest achievement to which any doctor can strive, regardless of the two simple letters that suffix your name.

Respectfully,

Truth is I want to be a doctor! But I want to spend my future loans wisely. I really could care less what others have to said but the truth is the public view does have weigh! Also, how we perceive ourselves also comes from how other people view us. We are not immune, this is a human flaw. Its like having two girlfriends. Do you stick with the one your heart tells you to be with or drool for the hot girl whose got it all, who may be available but may not want you! But the end result is basically the same: You get a girl!

If I had a hot girl, I am sure I would feel very confident. Thats a big if, on the other hand, if I went with my heart, its a sure thing, but I would find myself sometimes daydreaming.

You need to realize that what people post on an anonymous forum may sometimes be just an attempt to create drama or entertain them selves when they are bored. Some of these people get banned for it; others walk the line and get away with some of it. Still, I think you are over-reacting. From my perception from a few years on these forums the majority of people that post here do not think less of the DO degree and it is just a few people, maybe 1 in a thousand, that will actually expend energy to argue the subtle differences between the two physician degrees. In the real world, at least where I have experience, people become professionals: cardiologists, surgeons, pediatricians, etc., and not MDs or DOs, and are judged by their own quality. However, your impression on me here gives me the opinion that you are a very insecure person and should in all reality obtain the most power and respect possible and since in your perception the MD degree is the sole provider of these things and perception is reality, you should go for it and not “settle for a perceived less”. Good luck

I DEFINETLY Agree with this. 👍 👍 👍

Dude,

You mis-understood my prescription (part of the problem in medicine I think).
1) My point was that SDN is like the tabloids sometimes, entertaining to read but highly exaggerated and pieces of truth. Stop reading it if it is affecting you so much. It can be a great tool but you obviously are getting discouraged by it.

2) If you are already feeling that DO is inferior and you will have any kind of complex upon graduation then DON'T DO IT! If you can't get into a US allo school and are desparate to be a Doc then go to the carribean get your MD and get out. I would of course tell you to go to a DO school but that is my biased opinion. You have to get over your insecurities or MD or DO you will always doubt yourself.

I just talked to a md on the phone who is now working per your advice. He said that he worked with a few dos in the hospital and they are just as competent as the mds. He also said that dos are at the same level as the foreign grads at competing for residencies. He advised me against going to carribbean because he said he noticed in the hospital that they have been abused and are bitter because of the route they took. He also said that do is basically the same as md in practice. He also told me that the mcat is not the best indicator of success in med school (I was concerned with this and that's why I feel mcat is important). He said doing well on mcat doesn't mean you will do well in med school but doing poorly means you are not ready for med school, especially the verbal section. He also said that dos do have limit in getting special residencies like dermatology etc. Otherwise, he said dos are doctors and have pretty good life.

He said I have three viable options two of which he recommend:

1. Go do route
2. Go do master at Drexel (prepares you for med school classes - 2 year program) and take mcat again! He said I shouldn't take mcat just studying by myself again because he said with master from Drexel, basically taking med school courses, will prepare you for the material on mcat better. (He got the master from there)
3. Go carribbean (He does not advise doing this).

Basically, he said for me, I should go do route. This is coming from someone who applied to med schoos four times to do and md schools. I told him that I feel out of energy and can't go through application process again and that time is of essence to me. He got the feeling I wanted to move on and start med school already. So there you have it!

grats..ur going to be a doctor..which school will you be going to?
