I have to get this off my chest. I'm venting, just to pre-empt any b$tching about my b%tching.

Does anyone else find this irritating? I'm not talking about on notes, obviously. But on EVERY form of correspondence like emails, etc. Like it's some form of distinction. Guess what? You don't matter, and no one cares.

I don't know, I think it's like, would I sign my name "Joe Schmoe College Sophmore" or "Jack Whatshisface Third Grader"

Thanks for being patient.

Or, you could just stop doing so if it annoys you so badly?

Aren't you doing the same thing with every post you make?

I guess....but the MS thing just seems to be a higher degree of douchebaggery IMO. And I don't sign all my emails/other correspondence with co 2007....just here because I have an inferiority complex among so many brilliant people 😳

You never know, I could go to Drexel Undergrad.

I don't though.

luv your avatar

I don't think people are doing that consciously. When we sign our notes in the hospital, we have to sign it with "signature, MSIV" or whatever. After writing a ton of notes, if I go to sign my name on a check, I sometimes start to write the comma and MS... and then stop myself. I'm not doing it on purpose - it's just that during the day you get so used to signing your name that way.

It happens quite a bit even later on. I have a pharmacy signature (i.e. the signature that you provide on the form to the pharmacy as your official signature) that I use for all of my notes, prescriptions, etc. because it's somewhat legible and you can decipher my first initial, last name and degree. I also have a legal signature which is illegible and that I still use for all of my personal affairs. I've at times forgotten to switch back to the legal signature and had to ask for another form, etc.

We have a guy at my school who signs into conferences as "my name, BA."

The 1st and 2nd years do it too....for the jollies of seeing something after their last name I suspect.

I think I just hate med students in general.

douchebaggery.....I haven't heard that in awhile 😀

This is either very sad or very funny. The fact that it's signed "BA" instead of "BS" does tell me something, though (makes me lean towards "sad").

Or...... Basically Anhedonic

If you really wanna walk on the wild side, why dont' you sign it Med Stud III or IV. To add a little more spice, don't even put a dot at the end of stud. That'll show em.

Pretty soon you will be signing your name, MD. So just have fun with it.

Sometimes it serves as a helpful identification, like when communicating with people in other graduating classes for meetings, organizations, etc.

However in class-wide e-mails, people already know who I am, so I don't use the "MS-x" designation, unless I'm trying to be humorous/creative/witty/annoying.

Do you hate my sig then?

I got sick of watching med students do that MS I thing. Even worse, watching people change their emails to '[email protected]' etc from regular old 'johnsmith'. So I started to sign my name 'My name, BSC, SSC' and nobody ever asked what it stood for. Finally someone did, and I could answer 'bronze swimming certificate/silver swimming certificate.' Longest set up, for the lamest joke ever. Quite possibly also a treacherous act of douchebaggery. (Which has fast become my favorite word.)

A Red Dwarf fan! 🙂

The new thing I've seen is people putting "M.D. Candidate 200X" in the signature lines of their emails. Give me a break.

It is even gayer when people puts pics of themselves wearing whitecoats on myspace.

It doesn't annoy me at all, because I assume people are genuinely doing it for identification purposes - for instance, if you're emailing an attending or someone who would really have no idea who you were and you don't want to be like "remember me, i'm that third year who worked with you for a month but whose name you never bothered to remember?"

What annoys me more are people who just can't let go of their undergraduate and have to put "Columbia University, 2004" or whatever... it is not helping anyone identify you except as a pretentious snot.

Who cares?

You're obviously allowing it bother you. Why let it?

I KNOW!!!! It totally gets on my nerves too. Like when people in your class send a group email to the class and sign, "XYZ, MSIII, JHUSOM, MD Candidate, Class of 2007." Ugh!!!!! Get a life!
I only sign MS3 when i leave a note in pt's chart.

Would you rather get a woman who's drooling over you or drooling on/over your stethoscope? 😍

As long as she's naked, it shouldn't matter.

Don't tell me you're going to leave your stethoscope on your shoulder the entire time. haha! 😉 😍

I do feel for the little people at times. Must be hard when you can't attract females based on looks/personality and have to play the "MD" card at every opportunity.

Yeah, I know someone who does that too. Then when he graduated I got an email from him a couple days later and he had changed the name in the from field. Not his signature (well he changed that too) but the emails actually show up in your inbox list as being from "His name, MD." Blech.

Not that I'm single but the MD card only works for guys - when a girl says she’s in med school it literally scares guys away (no offense men but most of your sex is petrified of intelligent ladies). Now when my boyfriend tells people I’m in med school they think he’s really lucky … for some reason there is still the notion that doctors make a lot of money. I actually try to not tell people I’m in med school - when they ask what I do I pretty much say I’m in school and if they probe further I will tell them.

The only time I ever write MS III is when I’m signing emails to the administration or the office of student affairs – just so they know what class I’m in – or when I am writing notes in patient charts. I wouldn’t ever put it in emails I send to friends … or anyone else for that matter. I definitely will not be writing MD on anything either and word to the wise, don’t ever put it on your drivers license. Not sure why anyone would in the first place (although it seems like some really feel the need). Reason being if you were to get into an accident that is your fault and you exchange licenses the person might see the MD and think cha-ching. I feel like writing my name is long enough why I would want to add, MS III, BS and ABCDEFG.

I think it’s pretty silly too to write MS __ on everything, we work hard for our titles but it is a little overboard to write it on everything. I prefer M½D – since I’m almost finished third year I think I’ve acquired half the D, first and second year plus passing boards being the M …. before everyone starts flaming it’s just for joking purposes 😉

Right! Signing things as My Name, MSIII is a total noob move.

The real 1337s out there sign it My Name, CC3! :meanie:

If I were to descend into douchebaggery when I am all done with training and boards, my "proper" name would read:

H. Foughtfyr, MD, MPH, EMT-P(IL), FAAEM, FACMT, FACOEM

(and that's leaving off my BS and junior lifesaving award!)
