My grades in my science courses such as gen chem 1 & 2 were a C and a C+, my Integrative Bio150 grade was a B and my Molecular and Cellular Bio 150 grade was a C+. These are all the introductory classes. I currently took Organic Chemistry and received a C and the Genetics Lab I took I received a B.

My GPA a 3.01 and my science GPA I am sure is below 3.0.

Should I start reconsidering going to med school. I do not want to do that but I am a sophomore in college and was wondering what I could do or if I still have a chance at all to get into med school. I volunteer at a hospital and was a research assistant for the Energy Biosciences Institute as well as an officer of a very well known cultural organization on campus. I was hoping these things would some how balance out? Any advice please???

Well, change how you study and start aceing your courses, for one. Go see your school's education specialist. You still have plenty of time and med schools like strong upward trends.

But, it;s always good to have a backup plan too.

It depends on how bad you really want to be a doctor. I know students that didn't do so well in undergrad classes and did not applied to med school right away, Instead , they got into graduate schools and got their masters, worked in education for a while and then applied to med school and got into several. I am assuming you are in your early twenties, so you have plenty of time to do lots of things.

If you really want to be a doctor, there isn't much that people can do to stop you.

Why exactly have you been getting grades like these? Before school starts, you really need to sit down and figure out what needs to be changed. If you've been doing badly for a specific reason or didn't have a great one semester, I would think you'd be fine. But you really need to figure out what's messing you up. Too much time out? Wrong study approaches? Until you figure this stuff out, I would advise you to stop the volunteering and tone down the officer work.

I had a bad semester just now and I also got a C in orgo 1. But I had other commitments and a mind that was in two directions that caused me to stop spending time with orgo and that's why I suffered. I hope you find a way to get out of it.

The key to a high GPA is to first believe in yourself. Until then your time will have little meaning to you.
