Just wondering what everyone thought of my situation as of right now:
My freshman year I didn't take school very seriously, and ended the year with a 2.8 over two semesters, in which I took general chem 1 and 2 as pretty much my only science courses.
I stepped it up over the summer, took physics 1 and 4.0'd it, and carried that over to this year. Over the last two semesters, I took orgo 1 and 2, both bio's, physics 2, statistics for scientists, along with a few university requirement courses, and ended up with around a 3.7, as I 3.5 or 4.0'd every one of these classes. Unfortunately, my overall GPA right now is at a 3.266 because of my freshman year.
I'm a physiology major at one of the top school's for this major in the country. My father's an oral surgeon, and I've worked in his office for the past 3 summers - basically sterilizing instruments and other lab duties, some assisting, and a lot of observing. My older sister is a general dentist, and I plan on spending some time shadowing her soon. Over the summer I am taking a few courses (non-science university req's, just to get them out of the way), along with taking the Kaplan classroom DAT course to keep fresh on orgo and bio, and basically just to start practicing for the DAT even though I'm not even sure when I'll take it.
One thing I wanted ask - I'm going to be taking biochem 1 and 2, and human physio 1 and 2 next year, along with a couple other physiology courses. Will these classes help me in preparing for the DAT? I'm trying to gauge whether I should take the DAT after my junior year, or towards the end of this summer.
Also, how much will my freshman year affect how dental school's look at me? I'm hoping they notice the upward trend in my gpa. Considering I do as well in my classes next year as I have these past two semesters, I'm assuming my overall should be around a 3.4.
Lastly, does the fact that all my dental experience is through my father and sister affect anything? Should I try shadowing a doctor I am unfamiliar with? Thanks for any help
