Like my post about UMiami, I am putting this out there for people seeking information beyond what you can find on the website.
I met with Dr. Denis Brunt, the chair of the department for the past 4 years. He's taught at UF and was the chair at ECU previously. He was very straightforward and helpful with the few questions I had. His research interests seem to be geared towards gait and the gait lab with multiple high speed cameras capable of 1000fps are a testament to that.
I was most impressed with the facilities FIU has. They are in a large 4 year old building with nursing students, OTs, and SLPs. There seems to be a good amount of integration between the departments with respect to sharing labs, equipment, and dummies. They are experimented with teaching anatomy alongside the medical students. The clinicals are spread out between 2nd and 3rd year. The computer lab in the building is modern and massive. The class of 60 split into 2 groups of 30. In contrast to UM's pads hanging on the wall, the lab classroom is actually made up of padded tables. I thought that was pretty neat. Faculty to student ratio is around 1:10.
The campus setting is beautiful with lots of outdoor sculptures, fountains, trees and interesting architecture. These are some pictures of the building on flickr.
It's on the west side of Miami, so traffic is more manageable and finding a place to live is more reasonable.
Personally, I rank FIU over UMiami, due to the new facilities, campus, integration with other fields, and the fact that the chair took time out to show me the program. Your opinions may very.
Feel free to ask me any other questions about my tour and I'll try to answer.
