Hey guys,
I am trying to narrow my list of NY programs. I want to only apply to the 3 year programs..here is my list

Albert Einstein
Metropolitan
State Univ at Buffalo
State Univ at Stony Brook
State Univ Upstate Medical

I would love to stay in/close to the city. Any red flags on these programs or which ones to choose?

Thanks
Peg

You are thinking NYC and 3 year program and not thinking ST. LUKES?Roosevelt--you are crazy. It is an awesome program!

😎 Peg,

Did you want to stay in NY or in NYC? Buffalo is a great program (I interviewed there) Amherst is a pretty town to live in and the cost of living is excellent but it's quite a few hours out of NYC (so is Upstate Medical in Syracuse) it's just a few minutes away from Canada.

i woukd venture to say that his/her research has been poor. I defintely think a NY list of 3 yr programs with SLR is ridiculous....also, considering the lack of the Columbia-Cornell combined program and NorthShore program from the list, my gut tells me he/she may need some redirection...

Hey Pegasus,

I agree with the others, St. Luke's Roosevelt has a great reputation as a program. I would suggest definitely having that on your list, or replacing one of the others.

How did you pick Metro? I haven't heard great things about that program, they have gone unfilled in the primary match at least for the last 2 years. There are other great 3 years with NYC if that is what you are looking for. It looks like alot of your programs are outside the city, which may be a financial or lifestyle choice for you, I'm not sure. Maimonides is relatively new program, 3 year, in Brooklyn.

sweetfynesse, NY Pres (Columbia/Cornell) is 4 year program, which is not what Peg was looking for.

Coleman,

thanks for the correction...i don't know why i thought it was three years, obviously i never research that program when i applied last year. but that was only because i didn't want to apply for any program outside of eras...too much paper work. anyway, it should be a part of eras now. as for other 3 yr programs- Methodist in Brooklyn is a good choice, although it is a community program, ie not univeristy affiliated, the residents all seem happy and they do get good training.

sweetfynesse,

I was wondering if you'd care to comment a little more about SLR. The hospital, the ED, the people, pathology, location, area you live in etc... hope i'm not forgetting anything 🙂

Thanks guys for the advice..yes, St. Lukes is on my list, just forgot to put it here. I do want to stay in the city, and I was told by an attending today that Metropol may not be the best choice..i had no idea until he said so...I guess that is why I am posting..to be sure not to apply to the not so stellar programs.

thanks

i applied to several nyc programs. here are my two cents.

by albert einstein, i think you mean beth israel. jacobi is a 2-4 year program which means you have to do a prelim year first.

beth israel is in manhattan. a few years ago they were on provisional accreditation. i am not sure if that has changed. there was one thing i remember others telling me when i applied ... they do their trauma at st lukes's i think so a lot of people were wondering what it's like to do a rotation elsewhere where there is a residency program. an aside -- they do have subsidized housing.

methodist is in brooklyn -- park slope -- it is more of a community training program. the residents there seemed happy. like beth israel, they do their trauma at suny-downstate /kings county (again with their own er residents). also, good subsidized housing in park slope.

maimonides is a pretty new program -- i think they currently have a pgy 1 and 2 year. don't know anything else.

st.luke's -- probably by far the strongest 3 year program in the city. again, great subsidized housing right by st luke's and thus columbus circle.

metropolitan -- has had accreditation problems for many years, i think. at least that is the word on the street. like coleman stated earlier, has had problems filling in the match for many years.

i think that is it for 3 year programs in nyc (which is where my knowledge ends).

I interviewed/know something about 4 NY programs. Personally, I see them in this order:
Rochester
Albany
Syracuse
Buffalo

Chances are, if you're considering not interviewing there, you won't end up there anyway. For example, I had the luxury of being able to cancel a few interviews. None that I considered cancelling ended up in my top 5.
