Next fall I will be applying for vet school yay!!! But as it comes closer I am also thinking more of my back up plans in case I don't get into vet school on the first round.

I was thinking that I would join the national guard if I don't get into vet school the first time. Has anyone else done this or have information if this is a good idea or not?

Does anyone know any vets that are apart of the national guard? I don't want to pick two careers that wouldn't go well together.

Thanks 🙂

You'll find more information on the national reserve website and talking to a recruiter than you will on here. Unless you plan on volunteering for active duty time on an extended basis, the two don't really need to go hand in hand. I am a mechanic in the Coast Guard, with 7 and a half years of active duty and now a year or so in the reserves. I don't like the reserves very much, but the healthcare and time towards retirement makes putting up with the stress of possibly being called away from my degree program almost worth it. That is definitely something to consider if you consider applying to vet school multiple times. Your obligations to your country ( and, as a national guardsman, your state) can disrupt your studies and put you back even longer. However, I consider that to be the only downside, as long as you enjoy the training, lifestyle during active duty times, and the job.

There are no veterinarians in the National Guard as veterinarians. If you're just looking to join the guard, it's a part time job, unless you manage to get one of the active positions. Those usually go to people with experience.

there are veterinarians in the Army Reserve, however.

Only the Army has veterinarians, no?
