If someone could help clarify, that would be great...

For Navy matching, December of our 4th year we match for an internship/GMO. Prior to GMO completion, we compete for residency match. If we do not match our top 3 choices, we may continue GMO and try again the following year...

Does this sound correct? I just keep hearing conflicting things from different people.

thanks in advance!

Pretty darn close to right. In Dec of 4th year, you match to an internship (in or out-service) or get a full deferment. During your internship, you apply for residency and/or dive medicine/flight surgery and look at potential GMO billets. If you don't get picked up for residency/DMO/FS, hello GMO tour. During your DMO/FS/GMO you'll apply for residency. If you don't get picked up for your desired program, you can either take what they give you or wait till next year and apply again. You can do this for several years if you'd like. Remember, for deferments (internship or residency) you'll need to apply and get accepted to the civilian program of your choosing. Hope this helps.
