NBDE 2 question: Ortho

Hi guys, can someone be kind enough to explain the differences between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd order bends in edgewise wires? Thanks in advance.

they re basically arch wire twists or offsets incorporated in it for desired movement of the tooth.

1st order bend: is used to generate horizontal forces

2 nd order bend: is used for tipping or uprighting the tooth in a vertical plane

3rd order bend:its a twist in the arch wire along its long axis ( not the tooth) for generating a torque ( to prevent unwanted tooth movement)

these are 3 kinds of bends incorporated in original edgewire technique, where as in contemporary they eliminate these by :

1st order elimination: by varying the thickness of the bracket base , instead bending the wire or offsets

2 nd order; bracket slot is inclined instead bendign the wire the in vertical plane

3rd order: cut the bracket at an angulation, so that it can produce the same effect in the arch wire with a twist inits long axis

hope this helps..

for further clarfication refer proffit , contemporary orthodontics

thanks for the quick response. I was reading chapter 12 from proffit's contemporary orthodtoncis ed. 3. along with chapter 10. Should there be a specific chapter that would clearly clarify this? Thanks in advance again.
