For anyone who knows about this, I was wondering if it is possible to retake the NBDE if you dont pass or if you barely pass and want to achieve a better score? If so, is there a certain timeframe that you have to wait before retaking? Right now I am not in dental school yet, but I was also wondering is the NBDE offered on computer like the DAT is now and thus available almost any day of the year, or is it only scheduled for certain times of the year?

You can take the NDBE on computer or the paper version currently. This may change in the future though. The computerized version is about $100 more, but you get your results in 2-3 weeks versus 6-8 weeks for the old fashioned way. If you don't pass the test, you HAVE to retake it if you want to be a dentist. If you want a better score you can also retake it, but your latest results are recorded so if you do worse, then that sucks. If you need to retake it, you have to wait for at least 3 months before retrying. You can schedule the computerized version for whenever is convienient (your school may have a set time frame though), but the paper version is generally offered in July and December (I think). Hope that helps.

Grtuck is right concerning the dates. July and December for paper, and anytime for computerized. A 90 day wait is the minimum between retaking, and the exam can only be taken twice a year (even if you are doing computerized).

Twice in a twelve month period, is what I recall the candidate guide saying.

And don't worry, you won't need to take it more than once.

Ok thanks guys for the quick responses.

Do any of you know anyone who didnt pass it the first time around? What did they do and how were they viewed by other members of the class?

They retook it and kept it quiet so that nobody would know. That's even easier now that it's available on computer.

The people I'm referring to only failed one section so they only had to retake one section.

now that's dedication. I can't even imagine how awful it would be to restudy and retake the entire test... and then restudy and retake the entire test again.
