NBOME Shelf Exams

HI,

I am currently studying for the ostepathic internal medicine shelf exam. I am using First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship and Blueprints, with PreTest for questions.

I would really love to do well on this test; At my school, you need a score of 700 to honor a rotation.

Do you guys think that the above sources would be enough to hit 700? What else could I use that is good? Most of the Medicine review books are huge.

Also, How are the Kaplan books for the NBOME exams?

that should be more than enough for the medicine shelf....i used similar books and got a 752 on the NBOME medicine shelf...if you really wanted to, you could probably find everything you'd need to know in the kaplan book, but you need a good review book (like crush the boards) to solidify/summarize the info....the only reason to buy kaplan books now would be if you plan to use them as review books for the boards later on, in which case using them to study for each rotation will make the books easier to go thru later on....they are probably a lot cheaper if you buy them now, since most people are done taking step 2.....also, try to get old test questions, because there are usually a lot of repeated questions.....

Why haven't I ever heard of the NBOME shelf? I think my school would definitely benefit from this...does anyone have any info on this or a school who administers these shelf exams so that I can bring mine up to speed..........would have been nice to have had these all along to help prepare for boards.

We don't have the NBOME shelf at LECOM either. I wish we did because I have no idea if I am learning enough for the boards just by doing my rotations and reading on my own. We take a little 25-point quiz thing at the end of each rotation that we don't even have to pass, it is just used to see if we are learning anything on the rotation. So I'm kind of worried for when the boards come around.

the NBOME shelf exams are supposed to be predictors of how well you will do on the boards (similar to how first and second year grades are supposed to correlate with step 1 scores).....i wouldn't worry too much if you don't have shelf exams...just try and read your subject review books (blueprints, kaplan, surgical recall, etc.) once or twice during your rotations, buy a good comprehensive review book (like crush the boards or step 2 secrets) to put it all together and review the old stuff as you get closer to the boards, and do lots of questions (i ended up doing over 2000 questions in the 6 weeks leading up to the boards)...u can use the questions to guage yourself....you don't even need to start comprehensive review until later on in the year anyway...anyway, that is what worked for me (step 2: 249/99, comlex 2: 94th %ile)....

does anyone have info on the grading? I can't seem to find anything NBOME subject exams on SDN, google, or the NBOME website.

I'm wondering what the scorings is like and what is honors.

Outside of the OMM shelf do you basically use the same books recommened for NBME shelf exams?

Here at TCOM I learned that we take the NBME shelf exam, not the NBOME shelf. The is the same exam about 12,000 MD students take on their rotations. From what the Associate Dean said, a good score on this exam helps with residency applications. The test is supposed to be quite difficult and is given for each CORE rotation (IM, Peds, Surgery, Psych, FP and OB). I'll try to get some more info. Students who fail this shelf, must remediate it before they get their rotation grade.
