Hi guys,
I got my score last week.I got an 87....Its not so bad(and I wont say that I am "devastated"),but its not a good score either. As everyone says...THE MYTHICAL 90 would have made a difference.
I need advice about whether I should redo NBDE 1 or give part 2 and start applying with this score.I am not done with TOEFL yet.
In the scores thread I have noticed that people have got admission with similar scores(sometimes lesser) but they have a lot of work experience in their home country or US.I have work experience of only 6 months back in India, and have no work experience in US.
The question is- WHAT DO I DO? START APPLYING OR REDO PART-I??? 😕
please advice guys...any input will be appreciated.
Thanks to all in advance.

Well done prachi. 87 is not a bad score. With that score I do think you have a good chance to get into nyu. But since all the application deadlines for 2006 are over it would be better to retake the exam. Frankly there is not much difference between 87 and 90 it is just that psychological thing....know what I mean.

If you are serious about getting into an advanced standing program please retake Part I however hard it appears to be. You may get 'lucky' and 'miracle' happens ( I am a good example of both) but if you want to take control of your situation then improving Part I score is your ONLY option. Trust me. With a Part I score of 86 and almost unsurpassable postgraduate training and experience (yes I say this with pride) amongst current advanced standing applicants I received mixed result regarding interview calls and very disappointing result regarding interview success. I also had reasonably good TOEFL score and decent GPA. Out of 12 applications I received 5 interview calls and was waitlisted in 2 schools. Ultimately I got 'lucky' and 'miracle' worked when I received admission offer from NYU after being waitlisted for more than a year. BTW I passed Part II along the way and it didn't make an iota of difference! To give you another good example of scoring 90, our moderator fido! received interview calls from ALL the schools he applied after he improved his score in December. He is already successful in getting offer from one school and I am sure will have one or two more offers in future. There are several examples of similar success in this forum after improving Part I score. If you can improve you score to 90+ in next 4-5 months you will possibly get interview in almost all the schools and hence the chance of success will be naturally up. I know that several people in this forum (and outside) with scores between 81-89 had been successful in getting a place in AS program. IMO that is sprinkle as compared to consistency in achievements by candidates with NBDE Part I score 90+. Time and again it was proved to be the right panacea for success in getting a place in illusive advanced standing DDS/DMD programs. I rest my case!

Hi All,
Thanks a lot for the input. All the advice is really appreciated.
RAhmed...your post really motivated me...thanks again.
All the best to you guys 👍

what can I use for anato? thanks

hi!
congrats on your part 1 score. in my opinion it's a decent score .but here's my view on the whole thing!i had a score of 89% when i took part 1 the first time.frankly speaking people with scores above 85% do get into schools in california.because a lot also depends on the clinical test.if you think that you can ace it among 100's of applicants then you may have a fair chance.for me i never had access to a dental facility where i could even practise.and the first time i took the test ,it was in december so anyway i couldn't apply to most of the schools .however just to make sure that i make it for this year i thought of retaking part 1 where i scored 93%.this way i could atleast bank on BU.cuz they look for high stats and its a 2 year program. i was right and am glad i made this choice.i was also accepted at NYU and waitlisted at UPENN. plus there are a few training institutes in california that help you prepare for the clinical tests.you have to see it for yourself if you can afford it or practise well enough for those tests anywhere you are.for me it was not practical for me to attend such courses because of location and money!you also have to consider the entire application package.do you have anything that makes you stand out. as you see a lot of students with scores even less than 85 have been accepted.but at the same time i also say that a high part 1 score is definitely impressive.you can maximize your chances of getting into a dental school.so if you have the time, and considering all other factors take it.part 2 is not important until it's a requirement for a school like loma linda or tufts!
hope this helps and doesn't confuse you!!!!!!!!! :luck: :luck:
i wish you good luck!!!!!!!!!

Thanks all for your replies.
Someone here suggested that I might have a chance with NYU.but I came across this quote on their website-
"In New York State, a bill known as "PGY1," passed in May 2004, requires that, beginning in 2007, all New York State dental school graduates must complete a clinically-based ADA Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA)-approved postdoctoral general practice or specialty dental residency program of at least one year as a prerequisite for initial licensure in New York State. This new legislation eliminates the clinical exam as a requirement for licensure in New York."
Does that mean that in addition to the 3 yr program we have to add this extra one year?that would make it a 4 yr program....is it going to be only for licensure only in NY,meaning that it wont be necessary if you plan to practise in another state?
Please help guys!!!

I think the meaning is staring at our face!!!! Please do not mind, but is it not all about practicing in the state of NY? So where is the confusion? It doesn't say anything about practicing in other state!! It's as clear as daylight. If you want to practice in NY state you do a year of GPR/AEGD. If you don't then you take NERB, WREB, SRTA, CRDTS, well whatever suits you and get the hell out NY state. Either way NYUCOD's AP program remains 3 years! (unless they change anything in future). I hope it is clear to anyone out there confusing NYUCOD AP program with State Dental Board licensing requirement.

Hi, I am in a dilemma too of whether shd I retake part 1 or head towards part 2? I got 80 only...I know, its low but I do have research experience too. Will that be of any use? I have a decent TOEFL and GPA too.....Can somebody suggest me too....

hi molarsmile, honestly a score of 80 in part 1 will not get u anywhere even with a research experience, so i suggest u consider retaking it cos most of u go through this the first time, so try improving a score, get over 90 atleast, u can check many posts on this website about how to prepare and what books to refer, u have enough time now to apply for 2008, so do it again and try to ace this time. good luck
