I am taking Phylogeny(w/lab), Chemistry1, Chem. 1 lab, Pre-calculus, and Understanding Visual Culture. I transferred to a new college this semester (I am a sophomore) and these were the only classes left when I registered. I know dental schools like to see a full load (15 hours). I am thinking about withdrawing from Pre-calculus and Chemistry 1 but I am scared that this will prevent me from getting into dental school. The reason I want to drop pre-calculus is because of the teacher. I just had my first test in that class and the whole class failed it. No one had higher than a 20 on that test. I really don't know if I want to drop Chemistry 1. I made a 71 on that test. I would have made an A but I didn't have time to finish the test. I am so STRESSED out thinking about all of this and whether or not I should drop these classes. I currently have a 3.8 gpa and only one W on my transcript (English 1102--dropped because the class was on another campus instead of the campus I was on). If I drop these two classes I will only have seven hours this semester. Can anyone offer me any advise? Thanks.

How many combined hours do you currently have?

I currently have 13 combined hours.

I have completed 30 semester hours. This semester I am taking 13 hours. I decided to post again just in case I misunderstood your question.

It is a tough call. But if youi can get B's in those classes I would stay in. Dental schools are more "fond" of B's that W's. What I would recommend you do in the future is take 13 hours max in the spring and fall semesters and try to cover like 8-11 hrs in the summer if your school is semester based. On the topic though, if you feel you might end up with a C in the class go ahead and drop them, but I feel if you practice more and try a bit harder you can make atleast a B in your classes. Try to really focus on your classes in the following semesters and remember this: quality of your grades will always outway in importance compared to the quantity of hours you take. Make sure you can handle an undergraduate load by taking hours that are reasonable, especially when dealing with natural science classes

question. correct me if i m wrong

if you drop chem1, does it mean that you will also drop chem1lab?
so that's 2 W's, i assume. in additional to your pre-calculus. that's 3 W's in one semester.
it is not the best picture you want in ur transcript.

see if you can talk with the professor and ask for advice, especially in chemistry.

I have a friend that dropped chem2 but stayed and finished chem2lab. Just dont tell your TA.

Many schools have Labs as separate classes. Mine offers 2 credits for most labs
so you can drop the class and continue the lab. You can also drop the "lab" section of the lab but attend the lecture section of it, path the final. Get an Incomplete. Then next semester just come and finish the lab without taking any test or quizes.
Regardingt the original question it depends. If you are going to get a really bad grade (sometimes you feel you will) then withdraw. I wish I did that but I was to stuborn to realize I was doing bad. But, as suggested previously, if you are getting B no need to W. At any rate I think W is better than F or D, my personal opinion. Then again it depends how many Ws you have.

Good luck.

yes, i know that lectures and labs are separated, but personally i cant do well in the lab if i m struggle with the class. this is why i "assume."

another point to consider is that butterfli82 is new to that school and may need some time to adjust. try to get as many hours as possible. at least such that your financial aids will continue.

As for your pre-calculus class, some professors like to fail everybody at first so that students will actually study. Continue to learn from the professor and see how you do in his/her second test.

At my school the chem lab is seperate from the chem lecture. I have an A so far in the lab and I wasn't planning on dropping it. I'm going to talk to my pre-calculus teacher tomorrow to see what he thinks I should do. I studied really hard for that pre-calculus test and thought I was going to get an A but the questions on the test did not represent the material he had gone over in class. That was why the whole class failed. As far as chemistry, I really don't want to drop the class but I don't want to end up with a C in the class either. I guess I'll take the second test in both of those classes and then see what I should do then. Thanks for the replies.

Hello,

I was an electrical engineering major at UIUC. Now, taking 15 hours in engineering is 15 hours of study PER DAY. At most, I had 13 hours. Do you think dental schools will like that?
