Hello!
I am currently In my third year at UofT. I am in both forensics and biology. I have taken numerous chemistry courses as well.
I want to apply to Dental School probably after my fourth year!
However, the only thing that is stopping me is my GPA! After my fourth years if everything goes as planned I should have a CGPA between 3.3-3.4. I plan on taking the DAT after I graduate my four years. I have a good amount of volunteering experience which kind of makes up for my low GPA (I did horrible in my first year but there is an upward trend). I am very confused on what I should do: should I either go back for a fifth year and get my grades up or should I do a masters program for a year?
Also, If I do well on the DAT do I have a good chance of getting into Dental School?

Thank You In Advance 🙂

I believe that a 3.3-3.4, while below the average of admitted students, is not a dealbreaker for a motivated applicant. You'll need to perform above average on the DAT to offset your GPA, of course.

I don't know if anyone is going to agree that your volunteer experience offsets your low GPA. I don't.

What to do going forward? I think some students get their masters if they don't feel like their application is ready after undergrad. It may not be necessary, depending on the total strength of your application. You didn't mention dental shadowing, so be sure to incorporate that into your plan going forward.

For a better idea of the statistical ranges you'll want to target, purchase the 2014 ADEA guide. I believe the electronic copy costs $10, and gives you access to every dental school's admission requirements, stat averages, and a wealth of other useful information.

Good luck!

Dont go back for a 5th year. If your application is solid, there isn't even a need for a master's program.
