I was on the island of Molokai this past summer, and hung out with a Dr. Emmet Aluli (not sure of the spelling).
Unfortunately, I can't give you much more info than that, except to say that he was very cool and offered to help me in any way he could if I wanted to do a UH family residency. I only was there for a few days. But, Molokai is tiny, so if you look the place up on the web and get a phone number for ANY medical facility and call it, they will know him and get you in touch with him. No matter what ANYONE says (including him), DON'T try to contact him via email. He promised me he'd get me all this cool info but never replies. You gotta call him and corner him - but he's great once you get with him.
If you're interested in cross-cultural medicine, as well as native rights and the history of the islands - Aluli is your man. He's been very active in those issues for years.
Uh, and the surf is great...not to mention the diving. And Molokai is basically the only island left that has retained much of its original culture. No Waikiki touron traps there. But of course, I went there to visit the former leper colony and to learn about mycobacterium. Right. Well, actually I played and learned some stuff...but mostly played.
