Hello.

I created this thread in order to acquire some guidance from senior fellows who have given USMLE or are about to give it.My question is regarding neuroanatomy. We have just started our course of neuroanatomy a week back and I am afraid to say it but our teachers are not up to the mark.I personally don't think that they would be able to do a good job in teaching us neuroanatomy. My seniors have already validated my concerns when I asked them about the competency of my anatomy teachers
.I have been following this forum and other USMLE forums and have realized that neuroanatomy does have a significant presence in the exam(USMLE).Sometimes the amount of questions are less but overall it is represented by a fair degree.
I am a non-US IMG,hence it is imperative for me to score absolutely well in USMLE or else it would be almost impossible for me to land a residency in U.S.The last senior who, I personally know matched after getting a 252 in step 1.However,before getting matched,he had to spend one year in U.S(after graduation) doing some research. So,you can say that he probably took a gap year.

Now my worries is that how should I effectively prepare for USMLE,particularly anatomy. I am not-so-good in anatomy. My marks in class assessments are usually average or below average.

1.Can you suggest books which will give me a good grasp of anatomy ? At the moment I use Richard S.Snell Clinical anatomy.I don't know whether this book is sufficient or not.

2. What should I do regarding neuroanatomy ? I know its tough(in fact very tough).I was going through Clinical Neuroanatomy by Snell and it absolutely boggled my mind. I don't know what is important, what to read, what not to read. Please any suggestion or advice in this regard will be highly appreciated.

If it helps in answering,I intend to write USMLE in the mid of 2015.That is also the time when I will be graduating.

I'm in the same boat as you. I suggest supplementing the HY neuroanatomy book with kaplan neuroanatomy notes and neuroanatomy videos if you can get your hands on them.
