Hey all,

I'm in a serious bind. And I need the experience and wisdom of my fellow SDNers.

The problem is this:
With regards to my ECs, the only one I have that is clinical is shadowing a physician (a DO - as I'm applying to DO schools as well as MD). On top of that being my only clinical EC, I have only been doing it from March and for half of april and all of may and june she is on maternity leave. So I don't continue shadowing until beginning of July. Even when I do begin again, I will be doing it for tentatively speaking, 4 hours a week. I might be able to get more hours, maybe 10 or 12 hours a week if circumstances favour me.

Does having 4 hours a week of shadowing for only a total of 3 or 4 months make my application weak? Because with regards to ECs I have quite a bit, but they are all non clinical and have a lot to do with volunteering in my religious community and tutoring student part time. As well as running a religious association at my university.

I have been trying very hard to get a position as a volunteer in a hospital but all the positions are filled for the summer.

Am I just over worrying for no reason? Because my overall GPA is 3.4 and I hope to get an MCAT of greater than 30.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers :luck:

hey man.. i figure, just as long as u got some exposure to medicine you're golden. all i've done is some hospital volunteering and i'll be doing a few hrs of shadowing during this summer. Your other EC's reflect what you're passionate about and that's what really matters. Just make sure you convey that point across in your descriptions and during your interviews. I can't stand kids who have a million things on their EC's but none of them really relate to eachother and its as if they do them just to have them there. Good luck.

Really..you think so...because I was pretty worried with 3.4 overall gpa

well, it will definitely be difficult with the top schools.. but a 3.4+ with a good MCAT should get your foot in the door with the mid and lower tier schools (just look at my mdapplicant link, im' applyin to like every single one!). Just write a ridiculously good essay and pray your LOR ppl wrote something nice bout you!

Nice....thanks 🙂

no prob pal. but here's a hint: if you're worried about your grades this site is definitely the wrong place to go to. the first few weeks i was on here i was freakin out. EVERYONES GOT 3.8's and 3.9's AND 36+ MCATS. i mean wtf, where are all the "average" people at??

I know what you mean man. I was using this place the beginning of winter term this year and was freaking out myself for similar reasons. This forum is addictive and has its pros but I try to stay away, because the more I stay on the more things things I found out to unnecessarily worry about.
