I live in Baton Rouge, LA and I can't seem to find any sort of programs about shadowing doctors. The volunteer services from one hospital said they did offer shadowing, but when I got there I was only able to volunteer and didn't really have any opportunities to meet with doctors.

Anyone have any advice how to approach random doctors for shadowing? Should I just maybe go to a small clinic instead of a hospital? Anybody from my area? Any suggestions would be appreciated...

Asking to shadow a doctor is sort of like asking a doctor to be your friend.

Most etiquette way to approach a physician about shadowing is to ask him if it's ok to volunteer in the clinic. Once you do that, then you can ask the nurses or if you know the doctor well enough, you can ask "Hey, do you think it would be possible for me to sit in a patient's visit with the physician?"

Hospitals I know of don't allow shadowing unless you're a med student. :-/
