Hey guys,
I need some help! So i applied to dental school early (i'm a 3rd year) and only 20...I figured i'd apply to see where i got in and if i got in my top choices,i'd go to dent school...well i got into all my top choices, including columbia which is where im going... however, i wont graduate til this summer. so i get done end of july and start the 3rd week of august in columbia...so i'll be burnt out when i get to columbia and have no break! wat do you guys think i should do? should i try to defer my admission...take a year off or go for it? ive been debating this everyday and cant decide...does anyone have any reactions? any input would greatly help! thanks!

So I am assuming you are going for your Bachelor's degree, am I right?

I just looked at Columbia's admission requirements:

In order to be considered for admission to SDOS, students must have:

A minimum of 90 credits at an accredited American institution or its equivalent (Preferred minimum is 120 credits).

6 credits, or the equivalent of one academic year of study, of coursework in English composition or literature.

A minimum of 8 credits, or the equivalent of one academic year of study, in the following subject areas (including lab):
o Physics
o Biology
o Inorganic or general chemistry
o Organic chemistry

SDOS also strongly recommends that students have university-level credits in biochemistry, biology, mathematics, sociology, history, the fine or industrial arts, and one or more foreign languages.

I can't see where it says that you need a degree to attend the school. I know the school that I am attending (UTSA) does not require you to get a Bachelor's before you attend, they just want you to complete the pre-reqs. So get in touch with the school and see what they say

Hey Dentalchica,
Congrats on getting into Columbia! If you think 3-4 weeks will be a good break till you start dental school...then just go this year. If you'd rather take your time and have something to do for the next whole entire year, then that's not a bad option either. THe thing is that you're still really young and have time. You could work or just relax for a year. Do whichever you think will be more useful to you. Weigh the benefits. There's no rush but if you have nothing else you'd really really like to do, then go this year and enjoy it! You'll be a 24 y-o dentist!!

Well lucky you! congrats, I personally don't think you should put off another year, you worked hard enough to get where you are you should just go for it. Cause who knows what will happen next year. I'm sure you can't drop your classes anymore cause it's too late into the semester now, so just dont worry about staying on top of school now. You got in!

I would just jump right in while you are still in an "academic" mood. I took a year off during undergrad and it can be hard to get back into the swing of things. I know other people have told me they felt refreshed after being out of school for a while, but that was not my experience. I say go for it.
