I am an NRI with a son currently in 10th grade in the US. He is a US citizen and has expressed a strong interest in pursuing a medical degree. We are exploring educational options in India and are seeking guidance on navigating the Indian medical education system.

Not answering your question at all, but I want to be certain you understand that although there may be positives to a medical education in India (cost, closer to home, etc), it will put your son at a distinct disadvantage when it comes time to getting a residency program in the US. Specialty choice will be limited, as will programs. Or, he will need to work many times harder to get a spot. If his plan is to be a physician in India -- then great, no issues. If the plan is the US, think twice about attending a non-US school if at all possible.

While I cannot speak to the specifics of medical school entrance in India, I will say I believe schools give preferential treatment to Americans. It is sort of a matter of prestige for them, and even used as a selling point to have western students, so they will probably be keen to have your son enrolled and would be willing to accept SAT scores and whatever transcripts he does have. SAT subject tests are another option to prove proficiency in chemistry and the like. You can just submit his transcript as is.

I myself easily gained admission into Kathmandu University in Nepal, despite it being quite selective for locals. It's my opinion that Indian medical schools will have a similar attitude, although certain top programs like AIMS would scrutinize the application more than a private program.

The real question is, does your son have any experience with Eastern education systems? They are significantly more demanding in terms of attendance requirements, and intentionally difficult exams. Having studied at KU, then taken classes at Duke, I can say the KU classes were much more strenuous.
