I am an NRI with a son currently in 10th grade in the US. He is a US citizen and has expressed a strong interest in pursuing a medical degree. We are exploring educational options in India and are seeking guidance on navigating the Indian medical education system.

From my initial research, it appears that students applying to medical programs in India require Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB) in their 12th-grade curriculum. As the US high school system typically doesn't allow students to take all three subjects concurrently in a single grade, I would appreciate any insights on how to fulfill this requirement. Specifically:

  • How can a US high school student meet the PCB subject requirements for Indian medical school admissions, given the differences in curriculum structure?
  • What is the process for converting US high school transcripts/GPA to the Indian 12th-grade equivalent for admission purposes?
  • Beyond the NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test), are there any additional qualifications or requirements for US citizens seeking admission to medical programs in India?
Any firsthand experiences or advice from individuals who have recently gone through this process would be invaluable. Thank you for your time and assistance.

Not answering your question at all, but I want to be certain you understand that although there may be positives to a medical education in India (cost, closer to home, etc), it will put your son at a distinct disadvantage when it comes time to getting a residency program in the US. Specialty choice will be limited, as will programs. Or, he will need to work many times harder to get a spot. If his plan is to be a physician in India -- then great, no issues. If the plan is the US, think twice about attending a non-US school if at all possible.

While I cannot speak to the specifics of medical school entrance in India, I will say I believe schools give preferential treatment to Americans. It is sort of a matter of prestige for them, and even used as a selling point to have western students, so they will probably be keen to have your son enrolled and would be willing to accept SAT scores and whatever transcripts he does have. SAT subject tests are another option to prove proficiency in chemistry and the like. You can just submit his transcript as is.

I myself easily gained admission into Kathmandu University in Nepal, despite it being quite selective for locals. It's my opinion that Indian medical schools will have a similar attitude, although certain top programs like AIMS would scrutinize the application more than a private program.

The real question is, does your son have any experience with Eastern education systems? They are significantly more demanding in terms of attendance requirements, and intentionally difficult exams. Having studied at KU, then taken classes at Duke, I can say the KU classes were much more strenuous.

Any firsthand experiences or advice from individuals who have recently gone through this process would be invaluable. It's complicated but there are several ways to solve the problem. First, to fulfill the requirement for PCB subjects (physics, chemistry, biology), you can consider taking additional exams or courses, for example, through SAT Subject Tests. Nowadays, there are a lot of methods of learning and solving learning problems (the same AI). Read the article https://affine.pro/blog/why-edubrain-deserves-attention, after reading it, I solved my problem. AI services can help in studying complex topics and submitting applications. I know that studying in India can vary significantly in complexity, so it is worth preparing for these features in advance. Thank you for your time and assistance.
Regarding GPA and grade conversion, I recommend contacting Indian universities as many of them may have a system for accepting US degrees, especially for international students.
How's the progress?
