I am finishing up my 1st year of pharm school. I have been with Walgreens for about 2 1/2 years and used to like my old store, but I hate the store I am currently working at as a tech (I mean seriously, I'm still a tech, even though I have my intern license...they are too disorganized/lazy to update my status in the computer). I've been there for about 6 months but only 1-2 days a month.

Long story short, I am 99% sure I'm about to be fired due to several miscommunications related to my schedule. None of it is related to anything serious or illegal. But I always hear pharmacy is a small world, so I'm wondering how getting fired from this Walgreens will affect me. For example, what will happen if I apply to Walgreens (in another state) for a PharmD job after I graduate in 3 years? By then I will have many preceptors to list as references, as well as my previous boss from undergrad. Besides, even if I didn't get fired, I probably wouldn't even use this current boss as a reference anyway, we aren't the best of friends.

And what should I do if I apply to a non-Walgreens for a PharmD job? This is more likely the case since I am leaning away from retail. Should I just completely omit my job experience from the past 6 months so they don't find out I got fired? I'm not even technically an intern so I don't even see how there would be record of it outside of Walgreens.

Keep in mind, all of this will be after I graduate in 3 years and likely another state...I am not planning on working until then so I can focus on my grades. would appreciate any advice.

why dont you quit now before they fire you. plus you said you dont want to work while in school so it works both ways

Mainly I'm thinking they will just fire me because I'm unable to work any kind of notice, which won't go over very well. My next shift is supposed to be in a few days, but I just found out today that one of my tests got moved, so I will have to cancel that shift - and the next shift is 2 weeks later during finals - which I already told them I couldn't do but they scheduled me anyway (this happens a lot). So their standpoint is that I'm cancelling shifts for "unexcused" reasons...it's ridiculous and I'm so fed up that I honestly don't care if they fire me, as long as it doesn't come back to haunt me in a few years.

Is your shift during school hours or after? If hours overlap, then I understand. But if it's because you have a test the next day, it's not acceptable for you to not work. It's not like you work everyday and it's taking up all your study time. Working 2 to 3 days a month, you have plenty of time to study. You can't work during finals? Why not?

I would definitely quit. My work experience is in the corporate world, not pharmacy. But on more than one job application, I remember being asked if I had ever been terminated. It's a red flag that you don't need, so why not just quit and avoid raising it since either way you'd be out of a job anyway?

When you leave Walgreens, your manager will fill out a form. The most important aspect of this form is that it has a section asking if this person should be re-hired. If your manager puts no on this form, you can have problems getting another job with the company. If the manager puts yes, you'll have priority for getting hired.

Great info...

OP - quit - it doesn't sound like the relationship has a future.

I agree, quit ASAP before they get a chance to fire you.

A little off-topic, but with pharmacy being a small world and everything, if you had a problem with one of your preceptors, will that affect you if you moved out of state after graduation and applied to other jobs? Or will it only affect you in the state that your preceptor works in? This is considering you don't list that preceptor as a reference, of course.

Probably wouldn't be an issue. The only scenario that may come up is the "missing reference". If you had a rotation with a company, and you are applying to said company, someone may wonder why a referral / reference isn't present in your app.

No real way to know for sure though.

This is way way easier to explain away than a termination though

You don't have to list him as a reference (you can choose whoever and how ever many you want for that) but you are expected to list every job you've had and it would look bad if you omitted one because you got fired. I think they might consider it perjury. With regards for future prospective employers contacting former employers, in California the only thing a former employer can tell a prospective employer is whether you worked there, the dates you worked there, and (I believe) if they personally would re-hire you. (I could be wrong on the last one, but I know they can't tell WHY you stopped working there). Hope that helps.

Unless your preceptor is someone very well known, it won't matter. So, if (s)he is THE authority on oncology - chances are oncology may be difficult for you to break into (though not impossible). If (s)he is just a PharmD so-and-so, then (s)he won't matter much unless you apply to work in the same institution/company/organization.

You, my friend, sound like a wimp. Unless you change your attitute towards work, it would be difficult for you to retain jobs regardless of whether you quit now, get fired, or keep working a shift once every couple months. 😀

Someone had to say it, and I am feeling evil today. 😉

Thank you.

Honestly, if you're there 1-2 days a month, what's the point of having the job? They haven't switched your status because you're probably not there enough for them to really care to do so.
