Hi everyone! I have my first couple of interviews coming up within the next month. So I've started shopping around. I know a suit is always the best way to go in terms of professionalism, but I'm trying to avoid wearing all black/grey/navy because I honestly hate the way it looks on me (probably because I'm just not used to it 😛) I found a white one-button jacket that I would like to wear. What's the consensus on white jackets/blazers to pair with black pants? I don't think the style of it makes it look tuxedo-ish. Kinda looks like this:

I would say no, but I saw lots of people wear various outfits that I would never wear to an interview so who knows. I think it's best to stick with a matching suit.

I've asked multiple people and they all said go with a suit too, so I think I'll just have to suck it up. I like the jacket so I may just keep it. Whatever helps me to get that acceptance!

Wear it to class when you are accepted, but stay conservative for the interview. Goodluck!

Ooh that's a great idea! I forgot about dress codes in certain schools. And thank you...I'll need that luck 🙂

Thanks for the inputs everyone!

Cute jacket, but I think your top and bottom should match for an interview. And I think a white suit is a n-no. lol.

Heh I feel the same about a white suit. I think I may actually cringe if I saw someone wearing one 🙁

What does everything think about a grey/black combo like this? Would this be acceptable?

I would say no to the white jacket. The second option above is probably a bit better but honestly, it's best to stay conservative during the interview trail. Good luck.

Just wear a neutral (charcoal, navy, or black - people will advocate against black for interviews, but it's really fine if you're in a pinch) suit. DO NOT pick a suit jacket with three quarter length sleeves. Do not pick a suit with weird frills or one that you might consider trendy. You may wear either a skirt suit or pants. Some people say that skirt suits are most traditional/conservative, but pants are 100% okay and many women will choose to wear them, especially for winter interviews. Wear whichever one you are most comfortable in. If you choose pants, make sure they are hemmed so that they are an appropriate length for your heels. If you wear a skirt suit, make sure to wear nude hose. You may wear a shell style blouse or other alternative, most women do not wear the traditional button-down collared shirt. Choose a blouse that has a neckline that works with the cut of your suit. You can introduce some color to your outfit in the blouse; obviously avoid super bright/neon/loud patterns, choose a color that flatters your skin tone and matches your suit.

If in doubt, err on the side of conservative/boring. You might hate it, but you'll hate it more if you don't get accepted because of a poor choice in your interview apparel.

I interview a lot of people for jobs at a big pharma company famous for their baby shampoo (probably a pretty big hint to where I work). I think the white jacket would make you stand out in a bad way (you want the person to be thinking of you as a future doctor, not as the person trying to be cool). The above outfit is great if you are trying to get a guy to ask you out at happy hour (well dressed business casual). Conservative is best for interviews. I actually don't like the first link below, but the other two could work. Definitely err on the conservative side... the more conservative, the more serious you appear to be taking the interview. About 50% of the first impression will come just from the way you look.

Here is a list of items for a woman:
• Suit (navy, black or dark grey)
• The suit skirt should be long enough so you can sit down comfortably (I also urge you if wearing pants to stay away from thongs. Just proper underwear with clean lines).
• Coordinated blouse (avoid bright colors)
• Conservative shoes (closed toed)
• Limited jewelry (no dangling earrings or arms full of bracelets)
• Professional hairstyle
• Light make-up / perfume (ideally no perfume)
• Neatly manicured clean nails (I'd recommend both hand and feet even though no one is going to see your feet, but a lot of women feel better about it)
• Portfolio file with documents properly organized (I'm not sure if this applies to med schools, but in pharma interviews this is a must).

If you want a second opinion before purchasing, feel free to PM me.

I used ann taylor's website to get a quality, good looking suit. Here are a couple examples they currently have:

I would go with Black, Navy, Charcoal, or a tasteful Beige. I only wear black to funerals. I wear Navy on all of my interviews. It is the most colorful, tasteful option in my opinion.

Beige is ok depending on your skin tone. Definitely don't look like any of the people in this picture: http://www.fashionoverstyle.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/funeral-dress.jpg. But, black with a white shirt and a few minor accessories is fine. I personally would lean toward charcoal or navy blue (that is with having no idea what you like) unless you feel something better complements your skin tone.

Tacky.

Wear a navy, black, or charcoal suit with a conservative blouse- it can be colored but not flashy. A necklace that doesn't draw attention to your breasts (pearls always work), earrings that don't dangle and a a professional watch if you have one.

Heels should be closed toed and a neutral color and be 1 to 2 inches. Panty hose are required.
If you wear a skirt it should be below the knee so that when you are sitting it will cover your thighs.

Makeup should be "fresh face"

Wear what you feel comfortable and confident in. If they don't accept you for wanting to give yourself a boost of confidence then that's not where you want to go to school.
