hello everyone...i have a few questions

im currently in my second year in school and really consider being a dentist but people say a lot of things lol about getting into dental schools and i just want to get some clear answers. btw im canadian and dont know much about the application process for dental schools in the states

1) for schools in the states, what is the possibility of getting in if i screwed up the prerequistes?? (first year was terrible 🙁) pure math and science

2) from question 1, and if i really want to go to dental school in the states, and knowing that my prerequistes are bad, is it okay if i take them during the summer or maybe 5th year?!?!? or do they drop the worst year if u showed a lot of improvement...

3) is it bad/looked down upon when in the third/forth year taking year 1 courses?

4) how does the dental school in the states calculate the gpa to get in??

thank you for reading all these questions and sorry if they were posted before.

I know of one state school that requires science pre-requisites to have been taken at a US college/university. Your best bet is to appy to US private schools since you're Canadian. It's competitive when you're not a US citizen because there are only so many spots given out. Do some research and see what you come up with though.

I'm also Canadian and I'm applying to 15 US schools this year. Almost all of them are private schools because they don't care where you are from. (I'm not even bothering with Canadian schools because they are way too hard for me to get into with my gpa- it's 3.35)

I would say if you can retake some pre-reqs, go for it. Dental schools like to see improvement. For me, I got some C's in my pre reqs and then in my 4th year I got straight A's and when I interviewed at NYU, my interviewer was impressed with that. Just focus on getting A's and work really hard in your last two years and retake courses that were really bad (eg. less than C+) when you can fit them in. Your chances are good if you can show improvement.

Also, as far as I've seen, there are no schools in the US that drop your worst year. Many schools in Canada do though...

GPA is calculated in two ways, with and without +/-. It's pretty standard I think. Search old threads here because I know there's lots of info about it that has been posted before.

  1. I think most schools in states require that you hv done pre req from US or Canada. So I think in that regard you are ok. You can always ask the colleges directly by calling them or visit their website. That is wat I did.
  2. If you screw up the earlier courses and later take upper level course and show improvement and possibly get A then although they will not drop ur worst year but might see that you made improvement so that is good.
  3. I don't think repeating same courses is such a great idea. But it is up to u.
  4. Don't kn about GPA calculation.
Good Luck
