I’ve been lurking on these forums for a while now so I thought I would post my story/situation. Currently I am in my junior year at a state university pursuing a degree in biology. My stats are really bad as of now, so I'm wondering if I have any chance of getting into any DO school. Had some family issues my freshman and sophomore year and really don’t know if I still have a chance

Stats:

Biology 1 – F

Biology 1 (retake) – B

Biology 2 - C

Chem 1 – C

Chem 2 – F

Chem 2 (retake) – F

Physics 1 - C

Physics 2 – D

My cGPA is a 2.1 with 55 credit hours as of now

I have 60+ credits to go to graduate and plan on taking a 5th year to retake every class under a B

Do I still have a chance??

If you can retake all of your classes and get A's in them and get that GPA above a 3.0 you should totally have a shot for DO program in the GPA aspect. The MCAT will play a huge role in your chances as well.

Good luck!

Start with re-takes, get A's in all of them (you can do it), don't overload yourself with credits, if you have free-time - shadow & volunteer.

Thanks for the encouragement, ive been gone for a while studying for finals but i believe i may have a 3.5+ this semester. However, i do plan to retake all those classes and start my upper level classes afterwards. So hypothetically if i ace all my retakes and do well on my remaining 60+ credits to achieve a 3.5+ AACOMAS GPA along with a decent mcat will i have a shot at DO schools despite the fact i have so many retakes? I volunteer as well and plan to shadow 3+ doctors.

What's going to hurt your app is the many retakes you've done. Also, I noticed you failed another retake of your chemistry II class. Your chances are not good. These retakes aren't meant so you can continuously keep using them. In medical school, you don't get to keep retaking courses until you do well.

You're going to need reinvention. Lots of it. You need to convince adcoms you can handle medical school and mature academically. Start by getting almost all A's from now on, even upper level science courses if you're really serious about medicine.

Basic science courses are a joke compared to what's in medical school. That second F in your Chemistry 2 class will be a killer.

Also, your MCAT will be important too, and if you're not doing well in your prerequisites, you're likely not going to succeed on the MCAT either.

You can succeed, but only if you start doing well in your classes and ace the MCAT.

1. Go see a learn specialist/ learn counselor (will help you with study habits and techniques)
2. Go see school psychologist (will help you with balance between school and family)

It isn't about just working harder, but also working smarter and having balance. When grades improve, come back on here and see where you stand.

I agree. Also a psychologist might help identify a learning disorder or other problem and be able to treat such.

Thank you guys for the criticism and feedback I know I really messed up but I'm fully determined to excel in the rest of my classes.. Im even dedicating my winter break in studying for my classes this upcoming Spring so I can get those A's. Ive got a long way to go but I am going to give it my all, I know I have the potential just been off course these past semester. However I will consider the psychologist advice and see if I can arrange a meeting. I will also continue to update this thread every semester just for motivation sake and to keep my goal in mind. Thanks

With remaining credits to go you would have to 4.0 every class to get a 3.0+ which is what you are looking for before applying to schools. Do best you can within next 2 years and get the GPA as high as possible. Retake classes after graduation for a year to get GPA to a 3.0+ and crush MCAT. During all this, make sure you pick up some LoR's (specifically a DO one and science one), volunteer, shadow, join clubs, grab a leadership role, indulge in sports/hobbies.

You have a long while to go (at least 3 years before you apply) so plenty of time to get urself right but don't be lazy.

Good luck.
