Hey guys!

Okay so making a big change. I was pursuing dental school but after shadowing I really do not like the day in, day out drill, bill, fill.

I really appreciate the scope of medicine much more.

Few issues...

1. I started at a CC. ~65 credits + an A.S, prerequisites including Bio 1/2, GC 1, Physics 1,2. Then transferred to a 4-year in state for remainder of prereqs + upper division classes.
2. I am a little nontraditional in the sense that I have had to work full time during undergrad, including overnights for the first year of school. This meant a light school schedule (only 9-12 credits) first 2 semesters.

Now I am finishing up my undergrad B.S. but because of the way my classes transferred from my CC I simply will have a gen ed bachelors with a minor in bio. I have a TON of credits and good upper level courses.

My plan is taking the MCAT this Spring. Then this summer take Biochem and Micro. At that point I will have my bachelors degree and then apply while getting more volunteer hours and doing whatever you guys suggest to strengthen my application.

According to the calculator in the stickys my GPA's are:

Overall: 3.763
Science: 3.694

EC's:
Volunteering at a low income free community clinic. (~80hours)
Coached a travel baseball team for 3 summers. (~4000hrs)
Worked ~4500+ hours as an aide for disabled clients
Worked ~2500 hours as a program coordinator for a before/after school care program.

So say I do well on the MCAT (508+) do I have a good shot at DO programs?

Thanks!!

B

Your application looks great for most D.O. schools, so long as you have a good MCAT and solid letters of recommendation.

Make sure to shadow a D.O.(and/or MD) so you have an idea of what the work of a physician is like. Even a physician's work can seem monotonous at times.

I have one very very good LOR from one of the best organic professors in the country. Will get one more from a prof and then one from the DO I shadow.

Would that work?

Thank you for your input!

Really focus on the MCAT and get a 510+ and you would be good for MD as well and stellar for DO. And shadow a doc, you'll be fine

Depending upon your MCAT score, you might be better suited for MD schools, your GPA is excellent.

Dental school is harder to get into than DO school. The average GPA for an accepted student at Harvard Dental is over 3.8.

Fine for any DO and some MD, in fact.
