Hello everyone!
I need some advice! It has been a while since I took physics (freshman year) but I still remember the basics of my class. So I was wondering if I used Kaplan physics with Ek 1001 will that be good enough as a studying tool. Or I know some recommend Nova or even TBR, so do I just purchase one of these two without EK 1001, will they be enough practice? My second question is that my friend loaned me her TBR MCAT Science workbook, is this book the same as the TPR Hyperlearning MCAT Science Workbook that’s much recommended in this site. Thanks for any advise.🙂

Hi, thanks for the replies. So basically you two are saying that Nova or Berk review are good for content and practice problem, but if I need additional practice are these two enough or should I go ahead and buy ek 1001 physics, so I am not really sure which one to pick yet. How about my second question? 🙁

I used NOVA's for content review and the actually AAMC exams for practicing. The practice questions in NOVA's are not similar to the MCAT but they still are good to do because they drill you on relationships, which is how the MCAT tests you.

For example, the MCAT almost never asks straightfoward problems like, if mass is 2 kg, a = 1 m/s^2, what's the force. It'll ask something like, if the mass halved and the acceleration tripled, how does the force change? This is how NOVA drills you to think about relationships.

I can't speak for TBR.

My advice when getting material is to get 1 (or 2 resources AT MOST) for a subject. If you find that you need extra practice, then get it later.

Thanks, so basically Nova physics is much better, I guess I will buy it then. Can any of you help me with my second question?

I'm not sure what you mean by TBR MCAT Science 'workbook'? I don't think they have a 'workbook' like that. They have a great 2-book physics review, which I've somewhat gone over, and so far looks really good for review and practice. I've never tried TPR though.

Never mind my second question I figured it out. The book was from the Princeton Review hyperlearning series and it basically gives you passage type questions for each subject of the science section. Thanks.

If you read through some of the threads here, you'll see that SN2ed consolidated a few existing lists and polls to come up with this consensus list:

Biology: 1. EK Bio + EK 1001 Bio, non-detail oriented 1. BR/TPR Hyperlearning, detail oriented 3. Kaplan

Physics
: 1. BR 2. Nova 3. TPR Hyperlearning 4. Kaplan

Verbal: 1. EK Verbal + EK 101 Verbal 2. TPR Hyperlearning 3. BR 4. Kaplan (Avoid if possible)

Organic Chemistry: 1. BR, by far 2. TPR Hyperlearning 3. EK/Kaplan

General Chemistry: 1. BR, by far 2. TPR Hyperlearning 3. EK/Kaplan

The general opinion is that BR and Nova are both very good for reviewing physics. BR gets the nod over Nova because it has more problems, better problems, and the answer explanations are really helpful.

As for the TBR Physics Workbook, I believe you are talking about the collection of review notes and passages that thye pass out in the class. IMHO, I think that set of materials (about 150 pages or so) is the very best thing you can do for physics, once you feel like you've reviewed.

EK 1001 is very good for simple practice. It will drill the concepts into your head and help you iron out silly (and often common) mistakes. But it won't help you with "MCAT" style testing. That's where practice FL CBT's come in.

I used Nova, after realizing EK physics wasn't enough, and it was very good. I've heard BR is good too, but never used it. You'll probably be fine with either BR or Nova. Just make sure you get in some good practices; simply "knowing" the concepts and formulas won't be enough. Good luck.

Having been on here for awhile, I agree with the list above except I like BR verbal for decent practice. There are alot of passages!

Physics - BR, if you have time I would read over NOVA.

BR practice Q/A is the best. I looked at everything since I suck at physics.

You will not regret getting BR PS materials.
