There is no real format of the personal statement. Most people write why they want to become a dentist. This is a good thing to write about because at every interview you go to that will be the first question they ask you. So i suggest spending some time exploring the subject because you will need to be prepared to answer that question come interview time.

Go to a bookstore and find books about med school applications. They usually contain a section on writing an application essay. That should help.

Just tell them about urself.
Explain to adcom why did u choose dentistry over engineering.

hey shahz2fly,

I was a cs major and actually used to love writing, but I found it harder to write the personal statement after not having to write papers in college. Here is a site that I used before I wrote my personal statement, it helped me a lot.

just go through each of the the sections, its pretty helpful!

hope this helps!

Check to see if your school has an application essay service. They can give you feedback on how to write your essay since it's not your traditional essay (with an introduction, 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion). Since you're basically limited to 1-1.5 pages, you can jump from subject to subject. I think the best advice I got from the application essay advisor was to make every word count. Don't be verbose. You want to get as much information in as possible, so don't worry about format such as transitioning from paragraph to paragraph, introductions, etc. Don't repeat any major points. I took my essay back and forth to the advisor at least 5 times, and each time, they kept shortening it. Look through example essays in books. They're great models. Anyhoo, I hope that helps a little bit!

Essayedge.com is great! For me it was worth every penny.
