Hello all,

I have lived in Kentucky all my life and graduated from UK in 2010. In the time I have had off I have been volunteering, shadowing, taking on jobs outside the medical field, and exploring different areas of medicine namely podiatry which I have been accepted to 3 schools but do not think it is the best fit for me.

I have come to the realization that I have no other choice in life but to practice internal medicine. My credentials:

uGPA: 3.9
sGPA: 3.85
MCAT: 24Q (9B, 7V, 8P) July 2012
~150 hours volunteering (Free health clinic, PT rehab, geriatrics, mission trips)
~80 hours shadowing (Internist, Oncologist, pulmonologist, podiatrist, etc.)
Summer Research Internship

I was wondering how competitive I would be as of now if I were to apply to osteopathic schools by June 1. I really do not want to retake the MCAT if I can avoid it, but I think as of now DO seems like a better route for me than MD considering what it is I would like to do and my credentials (low MCAT).

I was hoping you all could also shed some light on # of schools I should apply to, schools that have a high out of state acceptance, and realistically how competitive I would be to attend in the Fall 2014.

Thanks in advance and I really appreciate it. Sorry for the long post.

I think you have a shot at the less established DO schools, but if you want to have better options, I think you should try to get at least an 8 in verbal since that tends to be the cutoff at a lot of places. If you raise your MCAT to a balanced 27, I think you'll have a good shot at most of the more established DO schools. Your GPA is great.

So if I do decide to retake my MCAT, I should go ahead and apply broadly to roughly 15 schools and then submit my new score I would receive later this year correct?

Will that still keep me in the pool for secondaries even though I will have a score pending?

Yes, thats correct. And you should receive your secondaries with it still pending. Good thing for you 24 seems to be the highest cutoff for DO schools to give out secondaries so you should be fine with getting them. Receiving an interview, however, may depend on the pending score.
