Need Some Reassurance

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I had a couple B's and was never asked about them. Realize that there is probably no salvaging this semester and that just means you're going to have to kill the next couple semesters. You're early enough in your education that it is entirely possible to come out of school with a really good GPA. You just gotta prioritize the things in your life that raise your GPA and drop the things that lower it. Learn how to study more effectively, find out what professors are easiest, don't take classes that are graded off subjectivity, and you'll be golden.

I was accepted and I have 2 B- in upper division science classes, and a couple other Bs. After my semester with the -Bs I came back and got much higher grades in the second parts of those classes.

I had an F and 3 C and got 6 interview and 1 acceptance so far. You'll be fine just don't give up!

This should be big reassurance lol

That is for sure hahaha! What were the C's and F's in, if you don't mind me asking? Did you end up retaking those classes?

F in orgo 1 and retook and got A ended getting A up till orgo 3. And C in gen chem, calc 1/2, and anatomy too. Also had like 2 W looooool. Granted I did research/worked and also got a pretty good dat (24 TS)

Also don't take this the wrong way. I made it waaaaaay harder on myself to get accepted because of this. You should still keep the mindset of getting all As. I'm just letting you know that a few bad grades is not the end of the world so you can stress a little less 🙂

Oh wow a 24 is high! Congratulations on your acceptance 🙂 Did you have a couple of B's too or was it just straight A's along with these C's/D's? Sorry for the abundance of questions btw 🙂

Thanks!

Yeah I was not a great student in college. Along with those I would say the remaining science classes were slightly more than half As. I had 3.3 ogpa and 3.2 sgpa. Hope this helps!

Also I did have an upward trend and had to explain how I became more mature and learned how to effectively study throughout college

What school did you get accepted to?

I bombed my sophomore fall (~2.9). Took Orgo I, physiology, bio lab, calc III, and a chem teaching practicum. All B/ B- except for practicum (S/U). Got 3.8 + every semester after that. 4 acceptances on Friday.

The classes get harder but you get better!

This definitely gives some reassurance! Thank you and congratulations on your acceptances! 4 acceptances is incredible 🙂 I guess I'll have to get better from here!

I got 2 C's in orgo and I got 3 acceptances. Never came up in an interview once. At the same time, my DAT scores showed that I know how to handle the material now. Of course you don't want to get C's if you can avoid it, but it's not going to be a dealbreaker if you can prove you're a competent student. Good luck!

A few bad marks here and there won't really affect your chances. The average matriculate has a cGPA of 3.55 and this is slowly increasing every year. If you have a lower gpa that is okay, just remember you just won't be as competitive in that section of your application as other applicants.

After my sophomore year, I had around a 3.4-5ish GPA. After that I realized that I really needed to focus on my grades instead of ECs and my social life. Ended up finishing with around a 3.75 GPA. Personally, I think it was really good for me to crash and burn my first two years so I could realize how serious I needed to start taking things, not sure if this helps you in any way, but I just want to let you know you can really pull your GPA up and its not too late if you're willing to put in the time!

I was in almost the exact position you are in right now. You'll be fine. A HUGE factor is trend. My sophomore year of college was by far my worst. I had a 3.2 fall semester sophomore year, and a 3.5 spring semester. I got a C- in orgo2 that year (I retook it and got a B, I hated that class haha). But after that year my gpa each semester was consecutively as follows: 3.75, 3.85, 4.0, 4.0. So my GPA trended upward (note I applied after I graduated and am currently during research during my gap year). However, I also did well on my DAT. I got a 23 AA and FINALLY conquered orgo, I got a 26 OC. I applied to 3 schools, got 3 interviews. Accepted at IU and Michigan, waitlisted at Marquette. You will be fine, just improve in the coming years and crush the DAT. I used DAT Bootcamp and Kaplan books, I did not do a Kaplan course to study. Hope that helps!

Update: I was able to turn those C+ into B’s by kicking *** on my finals. I was feeling really hopeless but I really put the time in and it saved me this time around thankfully. Never underestimate the power of cumulative finals and their effect on your grade!! Thank you to everyone for their reassurance and personal anecdotes, I think it definitely encouraged me to not give up and go HAM for my finals 🙂

Hey! Keep your head up! I had 7 C's, mostly in science classes, and 8 B's and ended up with a 3.31sci and 3.38 overall. I applied to 14 schools and interviewed at 4 schools all with average GPA's of 3.55< with a 20AA and 16PAT. Totally not the end of the world. You will bounce back and keep killing it.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. Good luck!

I was a perfectionist as well and being in college with a biochem major was a smack in the face (graduated in 3.5 years while playing college soccer). I got at least 2 C’s, a couple B-, and hardly any A’s (unfortunately). I got accepted this year. Honestly, just do well on the DAT and get some good dental shadowing experience and you should be competitive. That’s what helped me get in this year! Try not to stress too much. You can put a bad semester behind you and try to get some better grades next semester 🙂
