It's obviously not ideal to have it, but own it and talk about how you've grown since then. Just my opinion, but you should probably apply DO as well to be on the safe side.

In my state this would be a summary offense, like a speeding ticket. Your fine was less than a speeding ticket so I don't think it's a big deal. Were you arrested or just given a ticket?

If you do have to report it I don't think adcoms are going to weigh it too heavily just based on reading about similar situations.

1) I tend to agree. A misdemeanor drunk/disorderly may be what the cops or arrested you for. But you may have paid $250 and and convicted of a violation not misdemeanor. You need to find this out
2) even if a misdemeanor it is nearly nothing. You will write a VERY SHORT (1-3 sentences) where you state the facts and that's it. no one will care.

Hi guys!

I'm applying this cycle (MD) and wanted your thoughts on my situation:

7 years ago (when I was 19) I was convicted and had to pay a fine of 250$ for a drunken mishap. My friend and I were walking home from a friend's house at night intoxicated and we threw trash out onto the street and ran away from the police when they arrived. Ended up just getting charged for disorderly conduct for misbehavior. I am now 26 and have obviously grown up from this situation. This was before I started my undergraduate schooling and I have not had an incident with the police since. I have no problem disclosing this to AAMC, but wanted your thoughts on how this will affect me as an applicant. I am just going crazy constantly thinking about this.

Strong extracurricular but nothing too crazy.

If anything will keep you out of an MD school, it will be your GPAs, not the infraction.

Just own it, explain it like an adult, and you'll be fine. I was really, really stupid when I was 19...as were we all.

Interesting that you say it should be short, why is that the case? I would think that adcoms would like a detailed, well articulated description of the event?

Yup, keep it short. AMCAS doesn't give you many characters to explain anyways (500). As everyone else said, verify it is a misdemeanor first.

It probably won't mean anything. However, you've been a model citizen for the last seven years; if it is indeed a misdemeanor, see if you can get it expunged. It's low-grade youthful idiocy and maybe the powers that be will see that you've grown up.
