I'm not sure which part of my PS I should take out... really could appreciate some help!
Need to reduce my PS by 1000 characters. Can anyone help?

I had the same problem, and then I went through it again with two things in mind 1) Take out anything that is repetitious in any way, shape, or form 2) Make sure you are expressing your ideas in the simplest terms possible. It seems much of the time that people tend to try to sound a little too smart and verbose in personal statements. Just say it flat out, no need to fancy it up too much. Those two things shortened my PS drastically and even allowed me to add further meaningful content.

Take out big words you wouldn't normally use in your normal conversation, cut out detail, cut out redundancy, cut out the long intro if applicable.

I love removing stuff from peoples essays 😛
- Shorten intro. Take out anything that is unnecessary, while leaving in something that catches the eyes of the reader.
- Shorten conclusion. Just sum up the PS with a quick sentence or two.
- Remove any super specific details. In mine I removed school names, dentist/supervisor names, etc. I.e. instead of saying "Through shadowing Dr. ______, I learned _____" you can say "Through shadowing, I learned _____"
- Mentioning one specific shadowing experience or just stating collectively what you learned from several shadowing experiences, instead of listing them, may help. Same for research experiences/ECs/etc. Remember you've already stated the specific experiences in your app. So remove these and focus on what you've learned/gained from them.
- Avoid repetition (ANYTHING that vaguely reminds you of something else you've written in the PS)
- Remove excessive adjectives/descriptive words
Hard to tell you what to remove without seeing the PS, but these tips helped me to shorten mine. Would be happy to read it and advise further, though! Just PM me 🙂
