My name is Joe and I have been a long time lurker here on SDN. No one from my family has ever graduated from college so this board has always been very informative to me on the whole pre-med process. I've always appreciated everyone's response that I have finally signed up for an account to receive some feedback and insight on a more personal decision I have to make.

For a bit of background information, I am currently an upcoming senior enrolled at a top 20 undergraduate school with a 3.9 cumulative gpa and a 3.8 science gpa with a decent resume.

My original plan was to go to medical school right after college. However, these days I am second guessing my decision primarily because I don't feel satisfied with my application status right now. I ended up voiding my MCAT in June because I just felt an immense pressure that just left me with a blank state of mind during the exam (however, I still signed up for a retake on July 2nd) and I have still not submitted my primary application for verification.

Thus, I have considered reapplying next year because I would have A) more time to prepare for my mcat and B) submit my primary application on time to give myself the best shot in the medical application process. I have worked so hard up to this point with my grades/extracurricular that I don't know if I would regret applying this cycle with a rushed and mediocre application.

However, is delaying this application worth taking a gap year? Since I didn't plan to take a gap year after college, I don't know what I would be doing at all. Additionally, I haven't been doing much this summer other than volunteering at a hospital because I was primarily studying for MCAT and I didn't want any other commitments while I worked on my application/secondaries so if I stop now, it seems as this summer was a waste.

Also I have been averaging 13's on both the PS section and Bio section on my practice AAMC's and an 8 on my verbal section so the extra month of studying would just primarily focus on practicing verbal which I hear from a lot of people is very difficult to increase.

Thank you for reading.

Sorry, but I was wishing to apply to mostly medical schools back at my home state (NY) such as Cornell, NYU, Mt. Sinai, Stoney Brook and I've also been very interested in University of Michigan and Pritzker.

The EC's that I have been consistent with include:
-2.5 years of undergrad research with a research presentation at an international conference.
-Two years of tutoring/facilitating study group (I have also won an award for it)
-Two years on serving in my church's audio and visual team
-~200 hours volunteer and 150+ hours on shadowing

Okay, and I believe you will have your scores back this august?
Have you started the application and sent transcripts?

I think you should try for some schools. Just because you don't apply super early doesn't mean you are completely screwed. Start working on your primary and take the MCAT. If nothing bites take a gap year and try again next year.

Yes I will receive them back early August and I have started the application and AMCAS has received all my transcripts.

Okay, I can partially make a blind judgement but the decision is yours..

I guess what you can do is apply because you aren't late at all. You have decent ECs and your GPA looks nice, 👍, however, the intriguing part is the MCAT score. If your score is something around 35+ you will be set for a nice ride. If it is below 30, it will be very bumpy with low chances of success. There is still a chance though, haha.
Try applying to more safety schools because you never know. It won't hurt you.
I think you have a very good possibility of getting in one of your listed schools. However, if for some unnatural reason, i.e. divine intervention, you cycle is not successful, I would apply broadly next time and early.
With that being said, kind regards and good luck!

May the force be with you!

Bump!

I know that the decision is ultimately mine to make, but does anyone else care to pitch in their 2 cents?

With your GPA and these ECs, I think you are a good candidate for medical school. If you could get your VR score to a 9 and achieve 12s on the other sections (which you said you were averaging 13s) that would give you a 33. That's a good enough chance to get in, especially with residency in a state like NY with multiple medical schools.

I would try to submit your application soon (to get in line to be verified) and practice verbal. Maybe only add one school until your scores come out in case your MCAT is lower than you expected. However, only add the other schools once you have been verified so you don't lose your place in line.

Why did you panic so much on the MCAT? Try to figure that out.
