Negotiating offers

So...I just received an offer from a major chain in paper. I figured I'll ask the group, is there any room for negotiating even if the salary is written on paper? Maybe 2k more?

I've also been given a 30 day period to respond. Is there any way that you can ask to extend that "deadline."

And can you even negotiate vacation details, or whether or not this is a binding contract etc etc? It seems like nothing was spelled out.

I can't speak for pharmacy, but in any other job I've ever worked, it's been as simple as writing out a counter-offer. Depending on the company, certain things may not be negotiable (such as the amount of time off per year or health benefits). But from companies I've worked for before, salary is the most easily negotiable and stock options, if they are offered.

It depends on your market. In the market I was just hired in there was NO negotiation. Everyone is terrified right now about their financial future, so corporations aren't giving a lot of wiggle room to their recruiters. It doesn't hurt to attempt to negotiate, but they definitely won't give in easy right now.

If you are from Philly, there should be no rooms for negotiation. There are exceptions like you willing to work night time, or be SP in a busy store. Other than that, I wouldnt bother. 2k after tax is not worth it.

If it is from a major chain, it will be hard for you to negotiate vacation details.

From what I have seen, they made it clear to us. Sign or get fired as a grad intern. No rooms for negotiations. 😡

Not sure who that was directed to. But at this time in the economy, personally, I'm settling for what I can get really. Not going the residency route might have been a bad choice, but hey, there's always next year to apply.

There's no harm in asking, but it's really about supply & demand. Are you in an area where pharmacists are hard to come by (and they're desperate) or a more popular area where the company isn't so desperate?

If you're going to negotiate successfully, you'll need to explain why you're WORTH the extra money, vacation, etc...not why you deserve it. Problem is, most fresh out of college grads really don't have enough "special qualities" to give them negotiating power. Do you have experience in management, special skills, etc that would make you more valuable to them?

However, I feel that because of my [insert good stuff about you here (ie- ability to rub my stomach and tap my head at the same time)], I would like to be compensated. I am asking that my salary be changed to [$$$] while the other benefits remain unchanged. If you have any questions, have your people call my people.

If you're staying in philly, i don't think you'd be able to negotiate. I asked when i first got my offer from a major chain i've worked for throughout school and got a flat out "no". plus the job market is tight here now as some of my friends are having a hard time finding a job. i'm going the Overnight route as a way to increase my salary.
