I graduate in June 2010 from The Ohio State University, College of Dentistry and I elected to skip an aegd/gpr pgy-1. I am currently an e7 with 8 years of active duty in the hscp program and I just sent an email to my detailer today.

I am curious, when I was a dental tech for 5 years before dental school I worked with a CDR in the dental corps on the USS Wasp and he had a sweet thing going for him and his family... he bought a house in Norfolk, VA and was going from ship to shore command right there in Norfolk; something people like to call homesteading. Since my wife and I just had twins (a boy and a girl) a year ago we'd love to be able to settle down in one city if at all possible in the military. What I'm getting at is, I know the navy is different now than how it was back when I did my 5 year enlistment as a DT (1999-04) and now navy dentists are operational more than ever; however I don't see it out of the realm of possibility that the navy wouldn't try to save money and send me from shore to a ship in the same city every 2-3 years for the 11 years I'll have to do before I retire (I like to brag... I'll only be 41 yrs old, baby!!!). This means I'll only need 4-5 pcs's and then I'm done, so I hope the navy will work with me in this dream I have. Does anybody know anybody in the same situation or themselves homestead with the navy?

While it's a good plan, keep it to yourself when you negotiate for orders. This kind of attitude does not go well with the detailers, who themselves like to be homesteaded...

So, it's theoretically possible but don't make it look like it's gonna benefit yourself and your family: remember that your wife and twins did not come with your seabag ;-)

You'll be given choices to Great Lakes, Norfolk and San Diego--so, talk it over with your wife and choose wisely.

Do you think you are special? Do you think that there isn't anyone else in your shoes? You were in the Navy for 5 years. You know what the military is about. Personally, it irritates me to think that just because you have had twins that you should have an opportunity that most people don't. If you want to stay in a certain area, then do your 4 year committment and get out of the Navy. Part of the life of military man/woman is the moving around and going where you are needed. You obviously aren't willing to make sacrifices for your country. Yes, I see your point of view how it could help the military try to save money by keeping you in one place, but realistically it wouldn't because if they don't send you, they have to send someone else. By you not wanting to make a sacrifice of moving, it forces another one of your colleagues to make a sacrifice because you want to be selfish an stay in one area. That type of attitude does rub me a little raw.

As I said before, if you want to stay in one area, get out of the military when your committmet is up. Otherwise, suck it up and deal with the life of a military member. By the way, you aren't the only one with twins in the military. I'll be in the same boat as you next year. As much as moving with the twins will suck at times, realistically they will have stronger personalities because of it. I'll be retired from the military by the time they are old enough to really be affected by the moves.

What I suggest is that you be up front about your desires with the detailers.

while i know you are asking about the navy and i'm in the army.....

i know what i would be told if i asked your question to my "handler"/career manager.

the answer would be something that could be translated into, "Tough Spit. The "needs" of the Army come first. And the Army rarely needs you to go where you would actually want to go."

i will consider myself lucky if i get something that i pick as my "Top 5" places i would like to go - and none of my "Top 5" will be one of the three most requested locations (Hawaii, Fort Carson, Fort Lewis).

see reply below... I had to put the quote to which I replied to

To answer your first question... I am very special, at least that's what my loved ones think. Also, I'm very willing to meet the needs of the navy and Marines and never had a beef with it; which is why I'm doing the military as a career and not a 4 year "you scratch my back while I scratch yours" tour. In fact, I served 2 years on the USS Wasp during 9/11 while I was doing online classes towards my undergraduate degree in biology... so not only can I talk wiseguy $hit like you but I can actually prove that I'm willing and ready to serve my country. My main question/inquiry was to get input to see if this was still happening in the navy because it makes sense that the navy needs a lot of dentists to fill all of those ship billets, thus by me requesting these billets I'm, indeed, fulfilling the needs of the navy. So, for dip $hits like you to not be able to comprehend what you read to then disrepect me is pathetic and uncalled for. Comprehension would tell you and others who reply to this negatively is: I want to fulfill the needs of the navy because the navy needs dentists on to fill OPERATIONAL SHIP BILLETS; however when it's time to get a shore billet I'd like to be able to get the shore dental clinic in Norfolk so we can go back to a ship after the 2-3 year shore tour is up. What is so wrong about this?

I totally agree. I didn't see anything in your orignal post that implied that you thougt you were ENTITLED to special treatment, only an inquiry into whether it was possible. It seems like some people are just looking for reasons to get offended.

Thanks, at least some people use comprehension when they read. Going from ship to shore is a normal rotation in the navy and it is not special treatment. It only makes sense to try to stay as close as possible to an area because of logistics, personally, for your family, financially (possibly buying a house), and it's just down right being human. I'll be an O3E with 9 years of service when I graduate so I think I know a little more about navy life than the jack***** who thinks it's fun to disrespect somebody who did most of their undergraduate studies out to sea at war.

Jaysea,

I am not even going to try to pick apart you post because your post showed your true colors. You need to change your attitude because you really have a chip on your shoulder.

The only thing I am going to respond to is you trying to show how you feel you are more dedicated than I am. I have been in the Navy since 1998. I did 3 years on the USS Carl Vinson durig which I was out to sea 27 of 37 months while attached to it. During the first 4 years together with my wife, I saw her a total of 11 months. We made sacrifices because I love serving my country. I, too, would love to be in one area so I could spend the time with my family and not have to uproot them. That just isn't was happens for the most part. It is people like you who try to work the system to stay in one area their entire careers that makes it impossible for others to just stay in one area two billets in a row. Yes, it is possible to stay in one area your entire career, but people like you screw other people out of opportunities of staying in one area for two times or even returning to the nearest base to their home for a tour. Part of being in the military for a career is making sacrifices. One of these sacrifices is moving around. Deal with it.

Lose your attitude and immaturity before you graduate from d-school because once you put on the railroad tracks you won't get away with it. You may have gotten away with your attitude as a junior enlisted personnel, but you won't get away with that as an officer. Wise guy, no, I wasn't being one. Just telling it as I see it. If me calling you out rubbed you raw (based on your immature responses), then you are in a world of hurt once you are an officer. Good luck!

Where did I say he was ENTITLED? Learn to read. I asked if he thought he was special. Big difference.

And to you Jaysea, I comprehended what you wrote. I just don't agree with what you want to do just becase you have a family because a majority of people fall in the same category!

I can read perfectly fine. Lets see, you said "Personally, it irritates me to think that just because you have had twins that you should have an opportunity that most people don't". Aren't you saying that he thinks he is ENTITLED to special treatment because he has twins. Maybe it's you that should learn to read. I'm not going to defend his replies to your post, but his original post was not in any way inflammatory and your response was out of line.

When you actually get to experience military life after d-school, you'll get to see there are those people in the military who like to work the system. One example of a person who tries to work the system is a person who does what he/she can to stay in one area. I know a couple people who have been screwed out of billets because of individuals who have camped out their careers in one location. So, no, my response was not out of line. It is people like Jaysea who irritate me. I can see Jaysea's point, but I WILL express my opinion. Just as you have the right to express your opinion about me, I have the right to express my displeasure about someone's interests. Knowing what I know abot the subject, I know I was not out of line in expressing my feelings. Maybe I did come across a little strong, but he had already come across cocky which gave me the feeling that he/she is just like those who have screwed people out of available billets. Many people would love to stay in one area their entire career, but when you do that you screw others out of a chance of getting to enjoy a certain location. That is what irritates me!

Having not been active duty yet, I will obviously defer to your experience. I guess what I don't understand is why it is wrong to ask to go ship to shore etc. in the same location. I think it would be wrong to complain that you didn't get to stay in the some location because you have kids/a family/etc., but I don't see the harm is asking. That is what I trying to get at earlier. Asking for something is one thing, but feeling entitled to it is another. I don't see any problem with asking, but I very much agree that if someone feels entitled to stay in the same place, then they are wrong.

Again, maybe I'm missing something since I haven't actually been on active duty so forgive me if that is the case.

Dude,

I think things are being lost in translation via electronic communication. Just for your reference, when I asked my detailer this question I included the fact that I'd even be willing to do back-to-back sea duties if that's what it took. I even then told him that being able to stay in VA would be our dream scenerio for the 11 years I have left; however if this isn't possible than I'm very willing and happy to meet the needs of the navy. My original post wasn't meant to look like I'm trying to screw others over for my own good... it was meant for me to be a good father/husband and not to back stab my fellow shipmates. If I didn't try to stay in one location for my family and put in for orders that would benefit my career (like small commands were I could do more leadership stuff) than I'd be a selfish dick. You are too negative and only see bad **** in stuff... I don't think if I got norfolk than a ship on-and-off than this would be screwing others over. In fact, I've never once got any duty station on my wish list when I was a dental tech and they sent me to the USS Wasp then Parris Island; plus others would look at what I'm asking/doing as a good thing (serving my country and what-not).

I am not caught up in what I think about others like you, so you are the one who obviously thinks that you are better than others since you feel like you have the right to judge me on a simple post.
