Hi everyone
Are there any nephrology fellowship programs in USA that would allow IMGs without the requirement of residency? Just for training, not for practising in USA. Could anyone please give info on this?

Have you tried contacting fellowships directly? Try googling a few a see what their requirements are.

Here is an example: http://www.med.umich.edu/intmed/nephrology/fellowship/apply.htm
Directly from the website:
Requirements:

  1. ABIM-certified in Internal Medicine
  2. ABIM-certification eligible in Nephrology
  3. Citizenship/Immigration status:
    1. Applicant should be an American citizen or Alien Resident (Green Card bearer)
    2. J1 and H1B visa status are not acceptable
Do you have a green card? Are you going to be ABIM certification eligible?

Thank you tiedyeddog for the reply. I went through some of the fellowship program websites but almost all require internal medicine residency in USA. I think there are some programs which take in IMGs without ABIM/ green card. Would like to find out these...will have to explore more.

Why would they train someone who can't even practice here? Honest question.
