When determining the net ionic equation, how do you determine which ions are spectator ions and which ones should be incorporated into the actual equation?

An example would be from question #70 on achiever:

the net ionic equation for FeS and HCl is:
FeS(s)+2H(aq) --> H2S(g) + Fe(aq)

The Cl- ions were crossed out and apparently excluded because they are spectator ions. Why would they be considered spectator ions from this equation???

Thanks for your help!!!

all the way at the bottom...hope that helps!

you would cancel out the elements you see in the reactants and products. But only the elements that are (aq). Solids and gases do not dissociate in aqueos soln. You would need to memorize your solubility rules.
