i am currently a medical student. I've been offered a year out program to do a graduate certificate/research program at a nearby university. it is in neuroscience. hopefully would get a publication and a lot of good knowledge from it.

any thoughts as to whether this would make me more competitive for NS residency down the line? thanks.

I'm a medical student as well and definitely think spending time doing dedicated research will improve your chances of matching in neurosurgery. If you take a look at the charting outcomes in the match document, matched students had more research experiences than unmatched students. What I don't know is if the difference was significant or not...but there's definitely a trend.
