Hello my fellow SDners,

I am currently a rising freshman in a private university. I am only beginning to take all of my prereqs for medical school. Yesterday, I sent an e-mail to a neurosurgeon asking for a permission to shadow him in the future. He asked me to set up an appointment and bring a CV. Since I'm a freshman, I did not done any significant accomplishments so far, nor have any eye-opening employment position (waiter does not count) Can someone assist me how to go best about writing a good CV for a physician shadowing? If you were in the same position as me and it was your first time applying for a doctor shadowing, how would you do it? Thanks 🙂

Did you tell him you were a freshman? Try to make a CV with everything you can. High school stuff, work experience, whatever you can put. Write a little mission statement perhaps on why you want to shadow him. Also, during your little talk, just let him know you're just starting as a freshman and that you will be participating in activities shortly. You're a freshman so I wouldn't expect you to have that many activities especially now that you've just started.

I don't know where to begin with this....

1. you're not a rising freshman
2. you don't apply to shadow
3. the doctor is probably expecting you to be a junior or senior..that is probably why they're asking for a CV

It's impossible for you to make a CV as a first semester freshman. Hell, it's impossible for you to even have a resume at this point.

.... I have no advice. Sorry.

I don't think he's going to expect you to have too much so I wouldn't worry a whole lot about it. I also had to send one to a doctor I shadowed my freshman year and it was a rather pathetic piece of paper. Can you honestly see him saying "No you can't shadow me, I'm not impressed enough by your CV."

You're only 19 ffs. Just send what you have and don't feel bad about not having much.

👍

I assume the only reason this guy is asking for a CV is to get to know you a little. I doubt he's trying to gauge whether you are adequate enough to shadow him. It's not like you'll be helping him do the damn brain surgery anyway, you'll be a mere fly on the OR wall.

Just show up for your neurosurgery shadowing experience with a piece of paper that says your two favorite things in the world are divorce and never sleeping. He'll identify you as a kindred spirit and get you into med school.

I don't think this is true unless you've lived in a cave your whole life so far. You can look up a standard format for a CV on google- typically includes your education, jobs, honors, extracurriculars, hobbies. It's ok to put high school stuff on there if you just graduated high school.

At the very least, it's good practice for the future- you'll be making and updating your CV for the rest of you education and career.
