Hey everyone! I just wanted to give you guys some hope, if you're starting to lose any. After applying for 4 years in a row, never getting any interviews till one this year, I received an acceptance letter today! Stick with it if this is really what you want, and I'm sure that all of you can do it too, if I can!

Hope you all have a great weekend 🙂 Go steelers!

How did you handle the LORs. Did you get new ones each time?

I got into Medical University of South Carolina. 🙂

About the LORs--I actually submitted them to my school's pre-professional committee when I was a senior in college. They held on to them, and I added to them over the years (one from my new boss, one from division chief, one from another doctor I work with, etc.). Then, I just had the school send them out again. One thing that was a little complicated was the fact that I applied to a D.O. school last year and had an D.O. write me a letter. So, this year when I only applied to M.D. schools, I had my school take out the letter saying why I would make a good D.O. 🙂

Just wanted to say congratulations!! You're a great example of how determination and persistence pay off in the end. Best wishes for your medical career! :luck:

Congratulations! You're in for the long haul...as if it hasn't been long enough! Congrats again!

Hey there young lady, congrats to ya!!!  You are what they call patient because it takes someone who really knows what they want to keep applying for 4 consecutive years. Way to go 👍 !!

That's awesome! Congrats on the admit. I've been toying with sitting out a year, but wasn't sure how to dispose of my DO letters (2). Or maybe just go ahead & start in the carib. Anyway, thanks giving some of us who seemed doomed to DO school some hope!

Thanks for all the congrats! It's so nice to hear of other people having similar stories too!

For the few years I applied, my grades were always ~2.98 science gpa, 3.2 overall. I tried taking classes after graduation to bring my grades up, but with working 2 jobs (now 3 jobs), it was tough. My MCAT taken the August of my senior year in college was a 28. I retook it in April of the following year and got a 27. Eek. More rejections for the next couple years. Last year, I applied to DO school, and after I had the acceptance letter in my hand, I knew I had to give MD schools one more shot. My boyfriend was a great motivator and believed in me when I was starting to lose hope, so after working in the medical field for a few years, I took a Princeton Review MCAT course, retook the MCATs, and got my score up to a 35. Also, I did more volunteering, published some more abstracts, and almost have a paper published. Two interviews so far this year, one acceptance, still waiting to hear on another one.

Yup, that's me in a nutshell. Just stick with it, retake the MCAT if you didn't put your WHOLE self into it the last time (the first two times I took it, I didn't do the homework for Kaplan, nor did I really take many of the practice tests), and never give up on your dream. 🙂

Hope this helps someone! PM me if you want any more details.

Why didn't you go to the DO school, when you got accepted????

No disrespect to you Anna (congrats on your acceptance) but mindy--you act like DO schools are soo "low down"--Anna's GPA isn't even up to par with most DO acceptees. There are many DO students with the same GPA and a 30+ MCAT. Your unspoken premise is that somehow what type of school one goes to automatically gives one less or more scholastic merit. Sure, DO schools traditionally accept those with "lower stats" but what makes this applicant any better? Again Anna, congrats for rocking the MCAT and getting accepted to a school that meets your needs!

EDIT: Ironically, I just noticed Mindy? was just banned for trolling.--Go figure. Nevermind!

i just wanted to say congratulations to you for your perseverance!! you have definitely inspired me to continue to press on =)

Hi. Congratulations! Would you mind saying what school accepted you and what you did differently this time?

Thanks a lot.

Just my 2 cents on this topic.

I am currently an MS3 at a US allopathic school and I can't WAIT until graduation in under 15 months! My story starts with an overall undergrad GPA of 3.1 with a science GPA of 2.98 and a MCAT of 23. I didn't get in the 1st time I applied...retook the MCAT, graduated from college with the good ole B.S. in Biology and reapplied...with an MCAT of 24 this time plus some research....didn't get in...again

so I worked for a year...didn't reapply the third time and applied to graduate programs. I got an M.S. with a grad GPA of 3.5 and good letters of rec, published a few papers, presented at a few meetings, retook the MCAT...again with a 24 (ARGH!) but decided to give it a chance again...reapplied (3rd application process). I got one interview. From that, I was waitlisted...believe it or not, I got accepted in August, 1 week before classes began, off the waitlist and that's all she wrote.

I'm top 15% of my class with 230s on step 1, high pass and honors on my clinicals and doing great. I'm looking forward to graduating and not for one second did my avg performance in college affect my ability to do well in med school nor did my nemesis the MCAT have any bearing on my Step 1. Trust me...if I can do it...you can do it!! I've worked really hard and put in my time over the last few years but it was all worth it. I still managed to have a life and have a good time. I thank God that someone was willing to take a chance on me....I think I showed them that they didn't make a mistake by giving me this opportunity.

I know about the med school application process inside and out...I know about dissapointment and I know about frustration, but I also know that it's possible to make it and if you have the stamina and the guts to deal with failure...just keep trying. We all have to do what's right for us so I wish each and every one of you good luck!!!

I think this is a GREAT SUCCESS STORY!!! My hats are off to you....A perfect example. You should be a motivational speaker for med school reapplicants. 👍 👍 👍 👍 :luck:

This was better than the bagel and coffee I had this morning!! Certainly more stimulating than coffee!! Thanks!

these stories are awfully inspiring. i hope my third year is successful, although my situation is drastically different from most others. we shall see i suppose.

i know that once admitted, i will be just like dreamlover. now i have infinitely more drive and passion for classes and a career that i love. i just wish i could somehow show adcoms that my track record may be average (plus one blemish) but i've changed and reversed direction. in addition, i think i want to go into orthopedics, which means i have to be top of the class and incredible boards.

Congrats annamarie. I like your spirit. 👍

seems like the 35 was the magic number... good job

As my biology teacher told the audience during the beginning of college orientation, "its all about how much you want [to get into Medical School]" in response of a whole lecture hall raising their hands. This tread is a perfect example of that determination and persistence paying off.

Hey all. After two grueling years, I've finally got my hands on an acceptance from U Buffalo! I know things didn't work out for some of you this year, but as stated time and time again, persistence DOES pay off in the end.

yea! yea! 🙂

Just wanted to share my story on here too for all the people out there because last year I was feeling pretty crappy about not getting in. Here's what I did to better my application. I finished working (may 2004-may 2005) in a group ortho practice, retook the MCAT (went up 5 points), did research at the NIH(full-time for 4 months, part-time for the school year), got(well getting next week) a masters from Johns Hopkings with a 3.9+ GPA, and got 2 great letters (NIH PI and Ortho I worked with). I did all of that in a year because I was just determined to get in this year. I got offered 9 interviews and I got into my two top choices that I interviewed at, Pittsburgh and the Cleveland Clinic. And on top of that the Cleveland Clinic gave me a FULL SCHOLARSHIP 😱 😀 and Pitt offered 20K/year.

So dont let anyone tell you that you cant do it because you are a reapplicant. Good luck :luck: everyone, I know how much reapplying sucks, but if you want it bad enough you will get it. I can honestly say that in retrospect, as much as it sucked at the time, not getting in last year was the best thing that could have happened to me.... So keep your heads up
