I am interested in the program at New College in California that offers the pre-reqs in 8 months. Has anyone been through this program? It seems like 8 months is suicide for these courses. Any thoughts?

I just looked at the New College's website - I was interested when I read your post because I had not heard of it. It's properly accredited with the Western Association, but medical schools tend to be pretty conservative institutions and the New College strikes me as a little "out there" (at least from my view in the South). I'd find out where they've successfully sent medical students. I don't mean that in a smug or sarcastic way! Medical schools do tend to be much more conservative than the rest of academia - and a school that offers a Master of Arts in "Activism and Social Change" might not be my first choice for pre-reqs for medical schools outside the Bay Area.

👍

Agree with everything posted above.

OP, if New College doesn't turn out to be what you're looking for (and I don't know anything about it- it might be just great!), there are other 1 year post-bacc programs all across the country. Take a visit to the Non-Trad or Postbacc forums and ask folks which programs they've enjoyed, and how they've fared in this last med schol admissions cycle.

Also, if you're currently living close to a local university, you might be interested to know that most unis will let you take the classes "a la carte." That is, you register and pay for each class individually without being in a formal program. Many non-trads (myself included) have gone this route.

The New College in NYC is actually quite old- Parson's School of Design is one of their programs...maybe the wc school is affiliated with them?

OP- I looked at New College as well. I had a very tough time getting them to commit to which medical schools absolutely accepted their prerequisites as well as a list of where graduates ended up.

I ended up biting the bullet and BARTing it to Mills College in Oakland every day for a postbac. It's private, so it ain't cheap, but if you have gen chem done, you can finish the post-bac in a year. Great school with a nationally known reputation for its post-bac.

I'd personally think long and hard about New College for a post-bac....
