new DO school to start in 2005

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
That's great news... more chances to get in 🙂

Do you have more information on that?

Apparently there is also going to be a new DO program in Florida (Sarasota, south of Tampa), associated with LECOM. Supposedly its going to be starting up in September 04.

Q, DO

So how many DO schools will there be by 2005? 21 or 22?

Does anyone have any solid information about this DO school in Atlanta? I don't want to get my hopes up for nothing. I would be willing to put off any acceptances for this year if this is true. I have a practice in Atlanta (Chiropractic).

I have received word from a family member back home (Detroit,MI) that the Michigan State school is also in the process of opening up a branch at Oakland University in Rochester Hills, Michigan. Rochester is a North Detroit suburb, and Oakland University is a medium sized, public, and pretty well respected University with a decent sized campus not far from the Daimler-Chrysler world headquarters. Apparently, these branch schools are ways to create more revenue, as well as further the profession... Furthermore, branches are a more viable option than start-up institutions because they do not need to go through the same accredidation hassle due to their affiliation with already accredited parent insitutions. Personally, I don't think the Oakland U school is a good idea. I think it's better to start branches in areas that do not have med schools to begin with, or are underserved. For this same reason, I think the people at LECOM are wrong as well for setting up a school in Sarasota, when there is already an Osteopathic school 2 1/2 hours away in Ft. Lauderdale.

bmw19,

I first heard about this school through word of mouth from a physician who will supposedly head up one of the ir departments. I took everything he said with a grain of salt. He said the school was definitely a go in 2005. 2 major hospitals have inked deals for rotations. As it stands now, DO stdudents from all over the country come to the Ga. area for clinical rotations - Warner Robins, Atlanta area, Columbus, etc. There are also some spots in Ala. as well. So the beginnings of clinical sites is in place. The rumors i heard about the site - either life(?) chiropractic or one of the historically aa atlanta area colleges that is going out of business (not spelman or morehouse) but clark or maybe morris something.

I have also seen a newsletter put out by the Georgia Osteopathic Institute stating that plans are set for 2005. This was an official document sen out by GOI prez stating that PCOM was proceeding smoothly with all the necessary paperwork.

All that being said, I would't turn down an acceptance to wait. As a previous poster wisely said, this might take a while to come to fruition.

I remember a while back rumors about a new school in Utah that never took shape.

hope this helps

Bobo,

so far everything you say is true. Morris-brown college lost their accred. and will prob. close leaving room for a new school. Life was also having probs and thought about adding a DO program to spark things up a bit. So I guess we will see. I hope it is true

There was also talk of a Touro Branch in Las Vegas, but I don't know if it is going thru or not

Do you have any evidence to support this information that you received or is it all second hand? That would be great if it were true, but I have read nothing about it anywhere.

hey where can i get more info about the school in sarasota??? i checked lecom website. would i have to apply to lecom for the florida campus or is it a seperate school? well the whole thing be done at florida or part in michigan?

thanks for the great information bobo!!! the more schools, the better!!!!

Hey guys,

First off, fyi LECOM isn't in Michigan, it's in Erie, PA. Second, once the accred. process is completed(according to the LECOM website), you will need to apply through LECOM in Erie and then they will ask you what campus you prefer...probably some question on a secondary or in an interview- if it's anything like the LDP/PBL/ISP pathway selection it will be addressed during the interview. The new Florida program is going to be entirely PBL. That's about all anyone knows about it I think.

From the school:

Cabinet is delighted to report the selection process has been completed
for leaders of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine's (PCOM)
proposed campus in Atlanta.

Paul Evans, D.O., PCOM '79, who has served as Associate Dean of
Curricular Affairs and Professor of Family Medicine at Oklahoma State
University College of Osteopathic Medicine, has been appointed Vice
Dean
for Academic Affairs and academic leader of the campus.

John Fleischmann, Ed.D., who currently is Chief Administrative Officer
at Georgia State University's College of Education, will serve as
Campus
Administrative Officer.

Heartfelt gratitude is extended to the members of the Selection
Committee who worked so diligently to select these two outstanding
individuals. We are deeply grateful to Oliver Bullock, D.O., Robert
DiTomasso, Ph.D., Carol Fox, Mindy George-Weinstein, Ph.D., Carol
Hargy,
Carol Henwood-Dahdah, D.O., and Student Government President John
Pasquella for their dedication and wisdom.

Dr. Evans and Dr. Fleischmann will be visiting campus this month. Once
visit dates are finalized, a reception will be scheduled so that the
PCOM community can meet our newest members. Both individuals will join
PCOM full-time when the Bureau of Professional Education certifies that
our application as a branch campus is accepted. That decision is
expected in August 2004.

The PCOM Affiliate in Atlanta is set for 2005. I was told during an interview at PCOM yesterday by Administration there. Not sure though, whether the plans will begin in 2005 or if the school is opening in 2005.

Touro University COM started interviewing for the Las Vegas location on December 17th, 2003. All applicants for the Las Vegas campus will interview at the CA campus. Next year, applicants to the Vegas program will interview in Vegas.
