New edition of Goljan Pathology

I pre-ordered the new edition from Amazon. After shipping, it was only ~$40, which I consider a deal (for the most part, the books I order for med school are far cheaper than the crap I had to get for undergrad, so I don't complain).

I chose to go with the new edition because it has online board-style questions, and there's a good chance that the errata from earlier editions has been improved.

The older edition should be fine. I just like online access to material, and $40 is reasonable for such a legendary Path book.

Did you receive it yet? It looks like it was supposed to be "released" yesterday actually, but on Barnes and Noble's website it doesn't say anything about it not being available yet, like it does on Amazon.

Basically, if I ordered it on Amazon today, when would I expect to receive it?
 
I pre-ordered it a few weeks ago, and they pushed my shipping date back to Sept. 1. I'd say if you ordered it now, you could expect it by the middle of September or so.

Same here - preordered a long time ago and my shipping date got pushed WAY back, yet my bookstore already has it. Annoying!
 
I preordered from Amazon on the 15th and it says estimated ship date, 25th. If that helps any.
 
Goljan comes to our school every year and does our board review course for a week. Apparently, he was telling everyone that his new one would be a significant improvement over the previous version.

well why wouldnt he say that? it is his book. i wouldnt expect him to say, "the older version is fine, dont buy the new one".

i did buy it though.

Maybe so, but I don't think he's just going to flat out lie to us in order to sell more copies either.

Like most of this board stuff, the older versions are probably "fine", but its not the same exam every year either, so as they change it up gradually, the review materials must keep up. Its been a few years since the last one came out, so a new one is probably justified.
 
Just bought my copy today in my bookstore.

Also, I like the disclaimer on the link that was posted:

are the audios pretty easy to find on the internet?

..not that i'm suggesting that. 😉
 
Has anyone done a side by side comparison to see if this was a must buy as Golijan has suggested himself?
 
My school has it now for $45.95. Amazon says that the shipping date is Aug. 29th for $40.45.

I too want to know if it's significantly different than the other version. My book store has it in the plastic wrap, so I can't flip through.

barnes and noble online price $44.95. With membership $40.45 including 3 day FREE shipping. I used Code: M3H4T4E (15% off)

Ordered mine on thursday night and just received my copy thru UPS. I paid $37.73

USC AND UCLA both bookstore don't have new 3rd edition so $37.73 is not bad

If you're planning on using it alongside 2nd year courses, you should definitely get the new edition.

I'm sure not that much has changed but Path is definitely high yield and Goljan definitely does his homework. If you think about about it, you'll be taking the exam some time next year in 2010, do you really want to use a source that would be 4 years old by that point? Especially if there is a new one out? I rather not gamble and cough up the 40 bucks and get some peace of mind haha.

And for what its worth, I flipped through the 3rd edition and noticed that there are definitely more side notes and the tables seem to be organized a bit better.
 
Picked up the 3rd edition today at my bookstore for $47.85 (I think) including tax. Comes with the Student Consult access, although as I undertand it they are still working out some bugs on the newest version. Biggest improvement there is the addition of clinical board-type questions from what my professor said (if I remember what she said correctly).

Smaller than I expected but it sure beats the 1,400+ page Pathologic Basis of Disease I have sitting on my bookshelf.
 
just sat down with the book tonight, super dense. Just about as detailed as Baby Robbins (Basic Pathology) Goljan lacks some biochemical/biophysical rationale behind process, though it seems sufficient for an overview which is the point. But Goljan definitly makes up in explaining clinical outcomes from pathology beyond what Baby Robbins does. I think I'm gonna take Path by reading Baby Robbins along with Goljan and annotating details that help me better understand/remember what Goljan is trying to say. If I had an exam on six weeks of medical school Path in three days and hadn't studied I would just read the appropriate sections in this book ad nauseum, and I gaurentee it would put me in a decent position to pass.

Once you register the book, Under Extras tab, there is a Rapid Review and Study Testing tools link.

I wonder if isn't up yet, b/c I(2nd edition) still have access to the questions even though 3rd edition has come out.

As a medical student as OSU - COM and as a student with both editions, I prefer the newer version. There are twice as many photos along with increased notations in the side margins. "Poppie" is the best and if you get the opportunity to attend a lecture or Board Review I strongly suggest you try it out. Most professors know their material, but specialize in one area. That one area they teach really well, but lack in others. Poppie does an amazing job at keeping all sections entertaining and related to clinical practice/application. Never in a med school lecture have you heard so much laughing and interaction between students and lecturer. For the one posting about "Annotating", I'd ask that you don't. The $40 isn't that much and Dr. Goljan puts a TON of work into those books all in the sake of helping YOU pass boards.
 
Dude that sucks. I just bought a new copy of the second edition then found this thread a few days later. bummer. Step 1 only comes once... is it worth it to up to the 3rd edition at this point?
 
If you already own the 2E I'd just stay with it. The third has twice the pictures and a few more pearls of info, but not overly different. It has also had alot of the errata corrected, though we still get emails from him telling us where he has found new ones.

Yes that looks up to date with what we have. I hadn't noticed that link before. He rereads the chapters before every lecture so he's pretty good at catching mistakes.

Do you happen to know if Dr. Goljan will come to your school and give board review sessions?

Did you mean to type "My" school? Poppie gives a free board review to OSU students, but as far as his travels I'm not sure of all the schools he attends. If you are curious about your school I can ask him.

That's what I meant.

I have to share something one of our Path professors said (this is unbelievably ridiculous). I was asking him if he would be willing to write some practice questions for us (our first block is coming up), to which he replied "no" and that we could go to other sources such as Webpath, Goljan, ect. I told him that those were fine sources but we want questions in the way they are going to ask them. He then said "Well, the Goljan stuff is OK, but you know he teaches at an osteopathic school, and that book he wrote is really for osteopathic students and not really for medical students." It took everything in me to not laugh. Freaking ridiculous.

😆 🤣 Your prof is onto our secret! :ninja: they teach us voodo ninga pathology here in osteopathic land...
 
I did it. I saw my friends third edition and then promptly went down to the bookstore and bought it, despite having a new copy of the second edition. The layout is much nicer and the additional pictures is a big plus.
