I'm conteplating if I should take the old GRE or the revised GRE. I haven't started studying yet and not sure if i can make the deadline in June for the old GRE. I tried to research about the revised GRE but didn't come across anything good tips. All I found was:

New GRE Highlights – The Three Sections: Verbal, Quantitative and Analytical Writing Remain
Verbal Changes
- no more antonyms and analogies and a statement that vocabulary will no longer be tested;
- more reading and reasoning questions
-Grading scale from 130 to 170
Quantitative Changes
- calculators allowed
- questions that test reasoning skills and not memorization (does that mean that the basic math formulas will become irrelevant?)
Analytical Writing Changes
- less clear
General Test Changes
- the scoring scale will be changed to a 130 – 170 scoring scale
- test takers are no longer required to answer the questions in order (presumably the test will not be computer adaptive)

For those who took the GREs already, do you think the revised one will be more difficult? I was leaning more towards taking the revised one since they were no more antonyms and analogies (my weak spot is vocab). Do you think I still need to buy the vocab books??

There aren't much prep books for the revised test yet, and of course no practice test.

Anyone also planning on taking the revised one?? If so, how are you preping? THANKS!!

There are prep books out in the bookstores now for the new GRE. Scores for the new GRE, which replaces the current version in August, will not be released until mid-November. You will miss any PT deadlines that fall in October and November. Some school websites that have deadlines these months state that candidates must sit for the old exam or they will not be considered.

I think what most people are saying is that if you have never taken the GRE then the new one would be fine but if you are retaking it to get a better score then to stick with the old one if you can, just because you will know what to expect. Hope this helps.

Look at the PTCAS website. There is a long list that has all the schools on it showing which version of the GRE they take... some only accept the old GRE, some will only accept the new one, some don't have a preference.

The GRE website has software called PowerPrep. They have the option of taking online practice tests for the current or the revised test. I got almost the exact same score taking the revised test as I did on the current test (right now they don't have the new scoring system ready so they scored the revised test online based on the 200-800 scale).

Even though I hate analogies and antonyms I really didn't think the test was bad when I took it last weekend. With the revised test I think the sentence completions are harder because each blank has its own column of answers to choose from whereas the current test allows you to eliminate answers easier.

I'm taking the new GRE this September and have been studying from Kaplan's New GRE study guide. I took the old GRE around 10 years ago, and am finding this one easier because there are no straight vocabulary questions. You do have to know your vocabulary for the new GRE, but all of the words appear in context, which makes it easier for me. The qualitative section is also easier for me because they use questions that are based on real life scenarios. And you're right - the test is no longer adaptive, so you can go back and review your answers. The writing section is exactly the same as the old one. The Kaplan book has practice tests, and I believe the GRE website does as well. Hope that helps!

Oops, meant to say quantitative section, not qualitative!

My question is this. I will be applying to programs in 2012 (for entrance in 2013) and have a GRE score from a the fall of 2008 that I'm pretty darn happy with. Do people here think that most programs will require NEW GRE scores by the time I apply in August/Sept. of next year?

I can't really say what schools are going to do in the future, but if I remember right most schools except GRE scores up to five years old. I don't know why they would change that, but you never know. If I were you I'd hold out until your application cycle and then contact the schools you are applying to and ask them. I found it best to get information straight from the horses mouth when dealing with the application process.
