Hey everyone! I took the GRE a few years ago pretty much off the couch and naturally did lousy. So I studied up and took it again a few months ago (new scoring system) and did much better I think. Its hard to compare when they are totally different scoring scales. Just wanted to hear from some other peeps that have taken the new one and see how I"m doing.

V: 158
Q: 148
AW: 4

verbal is good...
aw is good...
quantitative may hurt you....148 is kind of low...

great V. Ok Q and Ok AW. Your combined in the old scoring system would be higher than mine at about 1180.

You should find out your percentiles whenever they're available (not sure how the new scoring system works in regards to when you get that data), since that's the best way to see how your score compares vs. others taking the exam around the same time. On the surface though, that's a great result if it's equivalent to ~1170-1180... Very few schools have an average GRE for accepted students higher than that. I'd say most schools' average GRE scores for accepted students are WAY lower than that.

From what I know about a few schools I applied to... WVU's is somewhere in the 1000s. Ohio U's average was 1110, Pitt's 1160, Arcadia's 1210. I'm sure MANY (if not most) schools have averages at or below 1100 too. All in all, I'd say you're in very good shape with that score!

Yeah I've looked at the chart ETS has posted to compare to the old system and it seems like I made out decently enough....I was really worried about the math (its my weakness) but it said 590-600, which isnt too bad but then I was confused b/c the percentiles for that weren't that great. Ugh. Its SO annoying that they had to completely change everything....no way to compare to school averages! I studied like crazy and am hoping like hell its good enough and I don't need to take it again.

At least in the old system (and it looks like this is the case with the new system), the same raw score (i.e. 150) will result in a higher percentile score in the verbal section than the quantitative section. I'm not sure why they haven't been able to adjust the raw scores for the verbal/quant. sections to more closely follow each other. Since they haven't been able to do that, on average most people end up with "higher" scores in the quantitative section. I put that in quotations since that raw score has nothing to do with their percentile.

EDIT: I stand corrected. It actually looks like the new system is a little better at relating the raw scores to the percentile scores. A 155 score, for instance, results in being in the 69th percentile for both sections according to that chart. A 150 score actually is slightly better as a quantitative score than a verbal score. Interesting.

So currently I go to University of Maryland and am a Junior. I have no yet taken the GRE which I should probably start looking into soon.

I currently have a 3.2 cumulative GPA (my science and prerequisite GPA should be around the same).

I expect to have approximately 130 hours of shadowing combined between clinic, hospital and possibly pediatric clinical settings.

What do you think I need to get on my GRE to get into a PT school/what are some schools within a few states of Maryland that may be decent for me to apply to with these stats.

Thanks!!

Look at every school they will have stats of the most recently admitted class. See what the avg scores were. It's impossible to say "oh get this and you'll get in." It doesn't work like that. Some people I've seen have had great scores and gotten denied and vice versa.
