Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Echinococcus!

Forms cysts in your liver and sometimes your lung
Twitter - 60 Echino.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Hepatitis E!

The viral hepatitis no one remembers. And the one that, while not usually severe, can make pregnant women very sick.
Twitter - 61 HEV.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Clostridioides difficile!

Even old C diff was once Clostridium. Why they changed it, I can't say. Maybe they liked it better that way?
Twitter - 63 C diff.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Chlamydia!

The most common cause of non-gonococcal urethritis. Which I always found to be a curious term.
Twitter - 71 Chlam.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Gonorrhea!

The most common cause of gonococcal urethritis. 😝 And the one that can sometimes sneak outside the GU tract...
Twitter - 74 Gono.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Gonorrhea (again)!

This time it's in your joints. Killing ur dudes. May also cause a tenosynovitis as well.
Twitter - 72 Gono MSK.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: More STIs. Mycoplasma genitalium!

One of the few bugs the CDC recommends 2 drugs for.
Twitter - 69 M gen.png

The most common cause of a (painless) genital ulcer. But as we shall see, not the only one... 🧐
Twitter - 76 Syph.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: HIV!

I feel like we've already done this one, but if not, HIV is an STI too. 😬 Also, I would rather have HIV than diabetes because it's so treatable. Crazy? Discuss.
Twitter - 77 HIV.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: BV!

Bacterial vaginosis. Not entirely clear it's an "infection" per se, probably more of a dysbiosis, but gets better with treatment including the partner.
Twitter - 78 BV.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Mpox!

Although not a STI in the traditional sense, sex-associated transmission is now a common cause of what was previously primarily a zoonosis. Infectious disease is crazy!
Twitter 99 - Mpox.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Hepatitis C!

Primary means of transmission is through blood (including injection drug use), but also potentially a STI.
Twitter 97 - HCV.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives:

Capnocytophaga canimorsus!Bonus fact not included in card: there are numerous Capnocytophaga species that are normal oral flora in all of us!
Twitter 86 - Capno.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Bartonella henselae!

Back to cats. Beware their scratches. Especially if those doing the scratching are feral kittens.
Twitter 88 - Cat Lymph.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Bartonella henselae again!

Cat scratch can also disseminate to the eyes and CNS. A potential cause of encephalitis.
Twitter - 87 Cat CNS.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Bartonella henselae again again!

Cat scratch can also rarely cause culture-negative endocarditis. Beware the kitten!
Twitter 87 - Cat Heart.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Anthrax!

Thanks to sporulation, considered a potential agent of bioterror. Thanks to vaccination, the risk can be mitigated.
Twitter - 81 Anthrax Lung.pngTwitter 83 Anthrax GI.pngTwitter 84 - Anthrax SSTI.png

Next draft Infection Cards for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Blastomycosis!

An endemic, dimorphic fungus that readily spreads to the skin, bones, joints, and GU tract.

GU tract not wanting to load... 🙁

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Histoplasmosis!

Another dimorphic fungi, histo causes lung disease, can disseminate to the lymphatic system in the immune compromised and elderly, and may instigate acute pericarditis in some populations. Because the latter's an immune problem primarily, treatment is with anti-inflammatories.

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Coccidioidomycosis!

The third and final endemic mycosis in the US. Unlike the other two, this one likes itself a good dry summer after a wet winter. While it can go to the skin, bones, and joints like many environmental fungi, cocci really likes to go to the CNS requiring life long treatment.

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Aspergillus!

Time for some molds. Or is it mould? Aspergillus is the most commonly encountered. In immunocompetent folks, likes to form fungal balls.
Twitter - 85 Asp Lung.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Sporothrix! The mold transmitted by cats.

More common than pulmonary disease, and typically the result of direct inoculation, Sporothrix can cause chronic skin and soft tissue infections though respiratory infection from inhalational exposures are also possible.
Twitter 91 - Sporo.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Paracocci!

A South American scourge. Can cause both acute and chronic disease primarily in the lymphatics and lungs respectively.
Twitter 90 - Paracocci.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Eastern Equine Encephalitis!

One of 3 equine encephalitides. What is it with horses and encephalitis? 🤔
Twitter 101 - EEE.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Western Equine Encephalitis!

If there's an Eastern Equine there has to be a Western Equine, right? Right. Hasn't been seen in the States for well over a decade now, though. Weird?
Twitter 102 - WEE.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: West Nile again!

Don't forget, for every case of West Nile meningoencephalitis there are countless more, usually undiagnosed, cases of West Nile non-specific febrile illness.
Twitter 103 - WNV.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Tickborne Encephalitis!

Ticks have plenty of encephalitis-causing viruses to share too. What's unique, and crazy?, about TBE is it can also be transmitted via unpasteurized dairy!
Twitter 106 - TBE.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Powassan Encephalitis!

Don't worry fellow -mericans, we've got a tickborne encephalitis too. Although still rare, Powassan's incidence is increasing.
Twitter 107 - Powassan.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome Virus!

The new virus fresh out of Asia that does what it says.
Twitter 105 - SFTFV.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Colorado Tick Fever!

Another tickborne virus. This one occurs primarily in the North American rockies thanks to its vectors residence at altitude.
Twitter 109 - Colorado Tick Fever.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Tickborne Relapsing Fever!

Caused by a spirochete, and one of a few causes of relapsing fever. Can anyone name some others? Anyone have a favorite? 🙂
Twitter 108 - TBRF.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Babesia! We ran out of viruses, but how about... a parasite.

Lots of zoonotic species, but microti is the only one that regularly infects humans.
Twitter 110 - Babesia.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Ehrlichia!

Where there's smoke, there's fire. Where there's Babesia, there's often Ehrlichia (and often Lyme). Interestingly, part of the Rickettsiales.
Twitter 111 - Ehrlichia.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Erysipelothrix!

Possibly the hardest name to remember / spell? Also, one of the few zoonotic pathogens spread by both livestock and fish.
Twitter 114 - Erysipelo.png

Next draft Infection Card for Epipocalypse: Bug Detectives: Rat Bite Fever!

Potentially caused by 2 different organisms and potentially also transmitted through unpasteurized dairy ("Haverhill Fever"). It's complicated.
