...the schools our country deems as "better" are nothing more than baseless reputations driven only by money...

You have now, Weedhopper, taken the first step towards wisdom, even if by accident. You have hit the nail on the head. Higher education is a scam, a money-making enterprise granting largely useless degrees to the masses, most of whom would be better served and more productive learning a respectable trade.

Even the Ivy League are mostly diploma mills. They protet their reputations as this lets them charge ridiculously high tuition which is willingly paid by a gullible public. Most of what you pay is for atmosphere anyways.

I attended the University of Vermont for two years but transferred to my state school in Louisiana when I realized how much more I was paying in Vermont for an undifferentiable Civil Engineering degree.

Maybe it was my fault my point was taken like it was, but I come from a place where academic prowess and work ethic are exclusive from money, power, and wealth.
You're a good example to show that they aren't mutually exclusive by any means, but the unfortunate fact is that Ivy League schools are loaded with rich kids who went to feeder schools. These schools aren't exactly known for their economic diversity. As such, be very careful with some of the loaded statements you're making.

"Diversity."

Was there ever a more vomit-inducing word?
I would have agreed with ya until last week when I attended one of the least diverse med school in the country. Males outnumber females 3:2, 80% white, and only a couple of internationals, people thought it was the coolest thing I spoke two languages.....

Everyone came from the same freakin' background, and I'm bored already.

Sorry, gotta say there's something about seeing people who have done different things, had different experiences, etc. Especially considering my patient base are probably going to be very different from my fellow students.

I've gotta say I'm curious--a few of the posters on this thread who are critical of Ivy League schools are nonetheless applying to one or more for med school. Why?

swarthmore?

i <3 swarthmore lol

I am sure it is just as difficult to get into swarthmore or one of the other top liberal arts schools as it is to get into the IVYs. what about haverford, carlton, grinnell college?

Touche, Andre. Anyone talking about Ivies being nonsense yet applying to them are hypocrits.

"Diversity" generally means "conformity" to an orthodox leftist viewpoint of the world as a collection of aggrieved victims.

Actually, I've only heard the right side of the fence describe it that way. Most moderates and liberals I know would define diversity along the lines of variety or multiformity. You know, the dictionary definition.
