Hey all! So I did the dumb thing that you are not supposed but people often do anyways: apply late in the cycle with an MCAT that is less than stellar. Anyways, I applied broadly MD and DO and got rejected everywhere except for 3 DOs. I decided not to turn in supplementals for 2 of the 3 because I knew I would probably be reapplying but have an interview in March at a DO that I am actually pretty excited for.

My initial stats were 3.8 sGPA and cGPA and 26 MCAT (8PS/10VR/8BS).

I retook the MCAT in January and just got my new scores, a 30, but (6PS/13VR/11BS)....not sure what happened with PS but its not good.

So here is my question: will sending my new MCAT hurt my chances at the school I am interviewing at in March? If I don't stand a good shot anyways should I just withdraw my interview to save $$ and reapply June 1 to mostly DOs and maybe one or two MD reaches? Has my new PS score royally screwed me forever? Do I need to retake the MCAT for a third time?

Send help!

I don't think you should worry about that PS score. I think you have a good shot getting in!

Someone please correct if im wrong... but i think pretty much all schools require you to submit all MCAT scores to AACOMAS. I really don't believe you need to retake.. you did phenomenally in BS/VR - holy props in verbal, its beyond what I could do! You DID improve overall, and 2pts in one section is mehh not such a big deal. You might get a question "WHAT HAPPENED WITH PS?!" but just focus on why you retook the test: you didn't believe it properly demonstrated your test-taking abilities. A 30 composite (and +12 in a section!) completely proves this.

If you're excited about the school, I wouldn't hesitate to submit your scores, nail the interview and get started on med school!

I know seriously how in the world did you get that good of a VR score. I think a 30 is fine but that 6 in PS is going to hold you back at MD schools. You shouldn't have a problem with DO though. I got accepted with a 6 in VR and I think that's worse than a 6 in PS.

If you want to retake the Mcat, buy the TBR physics and gen chem books. You'll have a 10+ score easy.

your new MCAT will substantially help. you could also consider applying broadly for MD early next cycle.

You guys have made me feel much better about everything! I think I felt the pressure of the retake and went blank for the first half of PS before I could get my bearings. As far as VR, I am a philosophy minor and all we do is heavy reading as well as extracting and composing arguments from text. Take a philosophy or logic class if you get the chance to! I didn't study verbal either time

You are fine. Your BS score improved by 3 points. That's a big improvement.

Probably not, but you definitely shot yourself in the foot for MD schools. At this point, go and interview, do well, and go there. Do not re-take MCAT again.. There's no guarantee you'll go up, and you might just as easily go down.

There was a member on here who had a ~30 but a 6 on the VR. I think he got into every DO school he interviewed at and then ended up going MD.

Going from a 26 -> 30 is a good jump and some schools mix and match your best sections.

That 6 isn't horrible but it is below the cut off at some schools. I believe KCUMB and CUCOM have a 7 cut off. I would still apply to those schools since your GPA is good.

Definitely update your MCAT score with AACOMAS (you have to!) and rock your interview.

If you want to apply MD you will need to retake for sure and get a more balanced 30+.

I decided not to turn in supplementals for 2 of the 3 because I knew I would probably be reapplying but have an interview in March at a DO that I am actually pretty excited for.

A few of my friends who got accepted had their interviews in Feb and March. With your MCAT update you might have gotten a last minute interview.

Okay! So game plan is to keep the interview (now I am excited 🙂), hope for the best since it is late, and worst case scenario reapply to 4 DO schools and 1 or 2 state MD programs on June 1st. I have no major preference between MD and DO, so long as I can become a physician I will consider myself lucky. Now to just get there...

If reapplying... why not apply to more schools? Better to cast a wide net then pick and choose interviews than to lack interviews and be in the same situation next year.

It's all about the $$s. I qualified for fee assistance this year but can't get it for a second year

apply broadly MD

I am pretty sure you can. I did. I think you can't get it more than twice though.

For the MD FAP program you get 5 cycles maximum. I don't know for DO what the limit is, but I can personally let you know it's at least 2 because I did 2 with no problem.
