Hey everyone!! I am definitely not your traditional student by any means. I am starting Pre-Med this August at Middle Tennessee State University. I am 25 years old will be 26 in August shortly after school starts. I am married with two wonderful kids one is 22 months old, the other is 8 months old. I am a US Navy veteran of five years joining straight out of high school. I dabbled a little after I got married trying to figure out what I wanted to do. I was a Sheriff Deputy for about a year thinking that was the career of my dreams, but as fate would have it I scratched the itch, and it wasn't for me. I have a passion for helping people, and serving my community. Talking to my wife one day on the way back from a cruise, she asked me to really think about what I wanted to do with my life.

I have always dreamed of being a doctor. I almost enrolled when i got out of the Navy, but I talked myself out of it. Luckily for me, my wife is a very intelligent lady. She has her culinary degree and is finishing a Speech Language Pathology degree this year. Needless to say she has encouraged me to take the first step. We both definitely have our work cut out for us, especially with two babies and a catering business to run. Bachelors degree is taken care of thankfully by my time in the Navy so debt looks to minimal with only med school to have to pay out of pocket for. I have decided to major in Biology. MTSU has an awesome Pre-Med program with dedicated advisors to keep us on track.

Obviously I have a few hardships. It's been a substantial amount of time (8 years to be exact) since I was in high school, and I am about to just dive back in to school. Well I think I've rambled enough for one post. Glad to be a part of this forum and looking forward to working in and learning everything I can about this great field!!

I would advise majoring in the easiest major possible, and spreading your pre med courses out such that you can attain the highest gpa

I wouldn't be too gungho about majoring in a science, believe me, for many, it can simply be a GPA killer. A low gpa may potentially put you at risk of not getting accepted to any U.S. Med school.

always always put yourself in the best position to get the highest gpa, science gpa and mcat score...ie don't rush into taking the mcat early just because you wanna get it over with & don't think "I'm gonna major in biology because I wanna be a doctor and biology = medicine"

Take it slow, tackle one class at a time and just do as well as you can in school, even if you need to take 6 years to graduate and you get a 3.7, it looks better than graduating in 3 years with a 3.3

Welcome to SDN! Consider also checking out our Non-Traditional Forum (a bit further down on the forum list), where you'll find others posting who have come to medicine after another career, including military veterans.

One consideration is that you should start some activities to help confirm whether medicine is worth it to you (if you haven't already). It is a long path, so maybe start shadowing/ volunteering now to see if your dreams actually meet up with reality. This serves the dual purpose of helping you decide this is what you want to do as well as helping you get in if you decide to pursue it.

I'm also going to second what @Malcolm X said... make sure you don't rush the MCAT, and give ample time for preparation. However, given your family situation, I would imagine that 6 years in undergrad, with another 4 of med school and 3-6 of residency might be a bit much, so perhaps shoot for 4 years in undergrad? Up to you on that one.

Otherwise, take it slow, and focus on GPA first, slowly adding more activities as you gain confidence. Research is a help for top schools (and low and mid tiers but less required), so if you have the time, try to get involved in a lab. Once you feel prepared for the MCAT, and your practice scores are within the range that you want, and only then, take the MCAT.

Best of luck and welcome to SDN. Feel free to send me any questions via PM.

"scratched the itch" lol
Are you still at MTSU? I'm an alumni, graduated in May 2016 - hated the pre-med advisors. MTSU does NOT have a pre-med program, it's a pre-professional track, far from a program. There is no emphasis on preparing students for the MCAT with incorporating curriculum - which defines a pre-med program - as well as the lack of bio-medical courses for non-biology majors.
