Thanks for the reply. So you don't believe that by applying to the "pilot" program it would increase the odds of you getting matched? In comparison to the regular staight through application? Since I'm Navy, I keep hearing for GS its like 50/50 for surgery residency vs gmo, so I was wondering if the pilot would be less competitive since its more gmo years. I woudn't mind a couple extra FS/GMO years if it at least meant I would have PGY2 secured.
What I'm saying is don't try and game the system. Be honest with the program director you're interviewing with and ask them what they think will be best. At the end of the day, if they want you in their program, they will find a way to get you. If fewer people apply for the pilot program, then it is possible you would have a better chance. But no guarantees.

I agree with not trying to game the system, however, there’s things outside a program directors control. My program director wanted me to stay (I even got selected as intern of the year) but I still wasn’t selected to go straight through. Only 1 intern in my class was, and it went to a colocation intern who also had a family member with EFMP. I may have been the better resident, but some things get higher priority in the Navy and there’s nothing a PD can do about that.

Just for others who might read this and try to read into what’s said:

EFMP and colocation have zero impact on selection status in the Navy. Now once an order of merit list has been generated and people are figuring out where to send people then EFMP and colocation absolutely can play a role.

By the time I'm interviewing I would have already selected to opt in to the pilot program though. But I understand this question is probably just not something that has a known response, and thank you for the help!
 
At OIS in 2003, an O-6 NMCP General surgeon (who made a joke about “killing people all the time”) presented the straightforward plan to eliminate GMOs. The ensigns in that room who are still in are now O-6s. Prospective HPSP applicants are still posting “I heard the Navy is phasing out GMOs.”

Good doctors and good hospitals take care of sick people in large numbers. Navy Medicine doesn’t do that and should stop trying. The military is made up of young and healthy people. On the occasions that those people or their dependents need cancer treatment or major surgery, they deserve to be sent to specialists who do those things everyday and do them well. Academic medical centers accept Tricare.

Unfortunately, what’s left over are increasingly empty MTFs where HPSP interns manage 2-3 patients on a service. Soon the interns going to the fleet look like medical students from 30 years ago.

The Navy needs to abolish all GME. Want to serve? Navy should pay for medical school and let you train in IM, FP, or EM. After that you can be a doc for a ship or operational unit. Specialty care completely outsourced civilian.

Wartime specialties should be reserve. Fund units at major trauma centers.

A small number of career Medical Corps officers can serve as administrators and rise the ranks.

Yeah, I'm not familiar with the process, but my understanding is that rank lists are usually due with your MODS application in October. You should have interviewed with at least one program before that (one ADT in the FY prior, and one ADT in the FY after). You can also do a phone interview, or even email the PDs before you submit. Unless you have to opt into the program prior to regular MODS application.

Hey when you mean one ADT in the FY prior and one after in regards to interviews what does that mean? My school's HPSP person said we schedule our own interviews usually in MS3 summer prior to applying to match. Were we supposed to do something during our MS2 ADT lol? and can we not interview outside our ADT's? If so Im doing something wrong...

You can do your ADT’s across the fiscal year line to squeeze 2 “acting internship” style rotations at 2 different military hospitals while you are applying. So you can do 1 prior to Oct 1st, and 1 after. For example, during my 4th year, I did one ADT in August, and 1 in October. Both were fully paid for by the military.

And then I did one out-of-pocket in September. I scheduled my rotation but the Navy wasn’t paying me anything extra to be there. But in doing so, I was able to rotate at all 3 Navy MTF’s that had my specialty. Which I think only helped me, and I ended up matching at my number 1 choice.

Your ADT during your 2nd year isn’t useful for anything. You just schedule it sometime and you get a little extra during that time period. You can’t bank it for later though.

Thanks for the replies. I just assumed the pay during ADT is the same whether you are on school orders or doing an away rotation. So if you just save up the extra money during your school orders ADT and use it while youre at an away rotation not during an ADT, then I don't see the difference. I think for my last ADT I will just use it for when I schedule ODS since I only have the one left.

Well, no, this isn’t exactly how it works. When on ADT, they will cover the cost of your housing for whatever away rotation you are on. When I used my 3rd year ADT for my first 4th year away rotation, it was in San Diego so they covered my entire month long stay at the navy lodge, paid for a rental car for 1 month, and paid for my flights to/from San Diego. In addition to that, I got my full active duty pay instead of my Hpsp stipend.

If you use your ADT at a different time, you’ll get the increased pay by being active duty but you’ll miss out on the hotel/rental car/plane costs and will have to front those yourself.

I had to pay for last away rotation out of pocket. The out of pocket one I was able to drive to (so no flights or rental car needed), but I had to pay a USUHS student for rent to use his house for my 1 month rotation.

But for ODS, you have to save an ADT for that. You can’t go to ODS and not be on active orders. So you’ll have to plan for that.

Ah I didn't know the ADT covered all those expenses + full active duty BAH/basic pay. Oh well too late now lol. Either way I woudn't have wanted to do that many aways, but thank you for the information!

This is the way. I thoroughly enjoyed my 4 weeks in San Diego, on the Navy's dime. I somehow actually got into a suite on Coronado - so I had a living room, full kitchen, and bedroom, rental car, etc., just 2 minutes from the beach.
